Press Release
- California city implements new network based on IP/MPLS and
packet microwave radio technology
- Network will significantly enhance response capabilities of
emergency personnel, expand support for additional services
for San Diego's 1.3 million residents
- Deal shows growing potential in public safety sector as
national and regional governments modernize aging communications
infrastructure
Nokia is working with the City of San Diego to enhance its public
safety communications network in support of critical services for
the city's residents. Nokia will upgrade the network using Internet
Protocol/Multi-protocol Label Switching (IP/MPLS) and packet
microwave radio technology, providing highly secure, resilient and
reliable data transport capabilities.
San Diego's data network is providing backhaul capabilities for
San Diego's P25 digital trunked radio system to help strengthen the
responsiveness of the city's emergency personnel. The city is also
expanding the network to support a variety of additional municipal
agencies and services in the United States' 8th largest city.
The new network will provide high-speed, high-capacity data
connections between San Diego's municipal facilities, enabling
enhanced voice and data communications, as well as video
surveillance for first responders such as police and fire
departments and supporting other applications including SCADA
(supervisory control and data acquisition).
This agreement highlights Nokia's growing focus on delivering
mission-critical networks for markets beyond traditional
communications service providers. Public safety in particular
represents an attractive opportunity as both national and regional
governments seek to modernize their aging communications
infrastructure for first responders, an area where Nokia is
particularly well positioned according to a recent study by Current
Analysis.
Nokia is supplying San Diego with its, 7705 Service Aggregation
Router, 7210 Service Access Switch, 7750 Service Routers and 9500
Microwave Packet Radio to manage Ethernet, TDM and video services,
and to support the transition to an all-IP network. The network is
managed by Nokia's 5620 Service Aware Manager.
Nokia is also providing professional services such as network
design and engineering, frequency planning and licensing, tower
construction, installation and commissioning and field
maintenance.
Key Facts:
- The City of San Diego has deployed a comprehensive Nokia
backhaul solution for public safety and other city services,
bolstering its broadband capacity in areas like microwave data
transport and laying the foundation for more advanced public safety
communications capabilities in the future.

services for San Diego's 1.3 million residents.
Kamal Ballout, Head of Sales, Global Enterprise and Public
Sector, U.S. for Nokia, said: "Municipal communications
