FRANKFURT—Labor union UFO, which represents cabin crew at Deutsche Lufthansa AG on Wednesday called off a planned strike, as the two sides agreed on the main points on how to resolve a long-simmering dispute.

After "intensive talks", progress was made as the airline made some concessions with regard to pensions and retirement benefit issues—the sticking points of the protracted labor row, UFO said.

The airline's cabin crew had already staged a one-week strike through to Nov. 13, the longest in the airline's history, which resulted in roughly 4,700 flight cancellations.

On Monday, the union had announced fresh walkouts for Thursday and Friday, saying it hadn't received an improved offer from Lufthansa.

As a basis for further talks, "it was necessary that Lufthansa makes significant concessions, particularly regarding pensions and retirement benefits," UFO chief Nicoley Baublies said Wednesday. "This has now happened."

Lufthansa, which has also been in disputes with other labor unions over the past two years, plans to hold a jobs summit with unions on Dec. 2 to discuss labor issues.
