Arrow Electronics, Inc. (NYSE:ARW), today announced that Chakib
Loucif, vice president of engineering, has been selected as one of
Fortune magazine’s inaugural “Heroes of the 500 2014.” Loucif is
recognized for his key role in developing the semi-autonomous
motorcar, an initiative known as the “SAM Project” to modify a 2014
Corvette Stingray to be driven by head and facial movements using
advanced technology.
Loucif is acknowledged for leading a team of individuals who
configured sensors and cameras, designed an electronic drive train,
and integrated a system to monitor biometric data to enable an
individual living with quadriplegia to drive a race car at speed on
a race track. On May 18, IndyCar driver and current Verizon IndyCar
Series Team owner Sam Schmidt demonstrated the car’s technology by
driving multiple laps on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at nearly
100 miles per hour. The SAM Project is a collaborative venture
between Arrow, Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., Schmidt
Peterson Motor Sports and Falci Adaptive Motorsports, a
nonprofit.
“Arrow congratulates Chakib and his team for this recognition
among such a noteworthy and inspirational group of individuals who
are working to improve the lives of others,” said Michael J. Long,
Arrow’s chairman, president and chief executive officer. “The SAM
Project demonstrates, particularly to disabled people, that
anything is possible with the help of technology, while also
influencing a new generation of mobility and safety
technologies.”
Fortune’s Heroes of the 500 2014 represents 50 men and women
whose personal passions, individual ideals and professional
endeavors are transforming communities. All of the selected
honorees are employed by Fortune 500 companies.
