ADRs End Higher; Financial Firms Rise

International stocks trading in New York closed higher
Tuesday.
The BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts rose 2.9%
to 118.19. The European index increased 3.2% to 115.35, the Asian
index improved 2.1% to 127.16, the Latin American index rose 4.4%
to 176.63, and the emerging markets index increased 2.9% to
225.03.
Barclays PLC (BCS, BARC.LN) and Lloyds Banking Group PLC (LYG,
LLOY.LN) were among the companies with ADRs that traded
actively.
U.K. and European bank shares rebounded Tuesday as the pound
regained some ground and markets took a pause after two days of
heavy selling. Among the gainers were Barclays and Lloyds, whose
fortunes are closely tethered to the U.K. economy and spending and
investment. Barclays rose 3.8% to $7.30 and Lloyds advanced 10% to
$3.07.
Gold prices retreated Tuesday as investors took profits after
several days of sharp gains. Among gold miners with ADRs, Randgold
Resources Ltd. (GOLD, RRS.LN) fell 1.3% to $105.52; AngloGold
Ashanti Ltd. (AU, ANG.JO) declined 1.5% to $17.19; and Harmony Gold
Mining Co. (HMY, HAR.JO) dropped 3.2% to $3.36.
Carnival PLC (CUK, CCL.LN) said its earnings soared in its
latest quarter as the cruise-ship company benefited from lower
costs and better-than-expected revenue. ADRs rose 1.1% to
$44.23.
