Commerce’s “Sand in my Shoes” award by the Company’s Chairman and
principal shareholder, Dr. Phillip Frost, and his wife Patricia
Frost. Presented by Miami-Dade County Mayor, Honorable Carlos A.
Gimenez, and Florida Blue, part of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield
Association, the “Sand in My Shoes” recognition is awarded to
extraordinary community leaders who have made significant
contributions to the region, demonstrating their involvement and
dedication to Miami as an exceptional place to live and work.

In addition to his role as Ladenburg’s Chairman, Dr. Frost is
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of OPKO Health, and has had a
remarkable career in business, medical research and dermatology.
Dr. Frost is a trustee of the University of Miami, Mount Sinai
Medical Center, and is a member of the Scientific Governance Board
of the Shanghai Institute for Advanced Immunochemical Studies.
Mrs. Frost, an educator, was the Principal of Henry S. West
Laboratory School, at the University of Miami, until her retirement
in 1993, and is now a member of the Florida Board of Governors,
which oversees the state university system. Mrs. Frost is Chairman
Emeritus of the Smithsonian American Art Museum Commission and
Honorary Chairman of the National Board of the Smithsonian
Institution.
Dr. and Mrs. Frost have a variety of philanthropic interests and
are currently focused on the University of Miami, including its
Frost School of Music, the Frost Art Museum at Florida
International University, and Miami’s new Frost Museum of Science.
Most recently, the Frosts have undertaken to establish the Frost
Scholarship Program to provide support for graduates of the Florida
state universities to study for advanced degrees in science,
technology, engineering and mathematics at Oxford University.
