Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) Chairman and Chief Executive Jeff Bezos
is calling on the online retail giant's main competitors to match
or beat its $15-an-hour minimum wage.
"Today I challenge our top retail competitors (you know who you
are!) to match our employee benefits and our $15 minimum wage," Mr.
Bezos said in Amazon's annual letter to shareholders. "Better yet,
go to $16 and throw the gauntlet back at us. It's a kind of
competition that will benefit everyone."
The letter was included in a filing with the Securities and
Exchange Commission on Thursday.
Amazon last year raised its U.S. hourly minimum wage to $15 for
all full-time, part-time, temporary and seasonal employees, a move
the company said benefited more than 250,000 employees and more
than 100,000 seasonal workers.
Walmart Inc. (WMT), the country's largest private employer,
early last year raised its minimum wage to $11 an hour from $9
after new laws reduced corporate tax rates.
Target Corp. (TGT) earlier this month said it would boost its
hourly minimum to $13 in June as part of its pledge to reach $15 an
hour by the end of next year.
