Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) said Chief Technology Officer Shaygan Kheradpir plans to retire this month and will be succeeded by Anthony Melone, who has been holding that position at Verizon Wireless.

Kheradpir is leaving to become chief operating officer for Barclays PLC's (BCS, BARC.LN) global retail banking division at the start of 2011. He had been with Verizon and its predecessors for 23 years, moving from his role as chief information officer to the newly created chief technology officer post in October.

Melone became Verizon Wireless' technology chief in 2007 and has overseen the wireless-telecommunications provider's upgrade in launching the joint venture's fourth-generation services. Verizon Wireless is a joint venture between Verizon and Vodafone Group PLC (VOD, VOD.LN).

Verizon shares closed Monday at $32.89 and were inactive in recent premarket trading.
