Valero Energy Corp. said Friday that above-average flaring of gases at its Texas City refinery that began during a storm Thursday have now ended.

In a statement to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Valero said the flaring lasted a full 24 hours, ending at about 6 a.m. Friday. The refinery didn't indicate whether operations were back to normal or if production has been impacted. Company representatives weren't immediately available.

The gas emissions started when lightning struck a transformer that serves the 245,000-barrel-a-day refinery.

An official with the government of Texas City, located 40 miles southeast of Houston, said on Thursday that Valero shut down many if not all of the refinery's units during the storm due to power outages occurring throughout the city.
