Target Corp. on Thursday said it has hired Anu Gupta for a newly created role of senior vice president of operational excellence, the latest addition to the retailer's remodeled executive team.

Ms. Gupta, who will report to newly appointed operations chief John Mulligan, will lead efforts to simplify processes at Target starting Oct. 12.

Ms. Gupta was most recently an operating executive at private-equity firm Hellman & Friedman and has held operational leadership roles at Michaels Stores Inc. and Safeway Inc.

Target has recently made a number of appointments to its executive team under Chief Executive Brian Cornell, who recently wrapped up his first year in the job. In August, Mr. Mulligan, previously finance chief, was promoted to chief operating officer.

Mr. Cornell has focused the company on just five key categories, including baby, children and wellness products, and has also placed a greater emphasis on fixing Target's lagging digital business.

Meanwhile, Target has said it plans to invest $1 billion into its supply-chain and technology infrastructure this year.

Target and others in the industry are facing broad challenges as they must still must perform basic tasks, such as making sure shelves are stocked and stores are staffed, while also managing the shift to a more complex supply chain, as online shopping has retailers scrambling to fulfill orders in different ways.

Target's shift to smaller, more urban stores also requires the retailer to rethink a supply chain that has long relied on shipping mass quantities of goods to large suburban locations.
