PARIS--The World Health Organization granted prequalification status to the new pentavalent pediatric vaccine developed by French pharmaceutical company Sanofi SA (SAN.FR), a status that allows the vaccine to be purchased by United Nations agencies such as UNICEF.

The new vaccine, dubbed Shan5 and produced by Sanofi's Shantha unit in Hyderabad, India, is a fully-liquid five-in-one vaccine that protects children against five diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, Hib (haemophilus influenzae type B) and hepatitis B.
