FRANKFURT—Volkswagen AG said it is recalling 680,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to problems with Takata Corp. air bags.

The company declined to comment on the cost of the recall.

On Tuesday, Daimler AG said it would take a â,¬340 million ($384 million) charge on 2015 earnings for the recall of about 840,000 vehicles with potentially faulty air bags from Takata. Daimler said it would recall about 705,000 Mercedes-Benz cars and about 136,000 Daimler vans in the U.S. after auto regulator National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notified it of rupture-prone air bags supplied by the Japanese manufacturer.

Daimler's announcement followed that of Honda Motor Co., which said last week it was recalling 2.2 million vehicles in the U.S. due to Takata air bags.
