One of BP PLC's main crude-processing units at its large refinery in Indiana remains shut after being damaged over the weekend, two people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday.

Representatives from the company weren't immediately available to comment on the reports, or provide the status of operations at the 413,000-barrel-a-day refinery.

It is unclear how long the damaged crude unit would remain shut, but one person said repairs could last a week or more.

The refinery, which started operations in 1889, is located in Whiting, on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan.
