Citigroup Inc. (C) released its mid-cycle "stress test" results, projecting a minimum common equity Tier 1 capital ratio of 8.6% for the second quarter of 2016.

Stress tests began in 2009 in the wake of the financial crisis as a way to convince investors that the largest banks could withstand a severe recession without government bailouts.

Citigroup said it submitted its results to the Federal Reserve in July.
