NASHVILLE, Tenn., Sept. 30, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/
-- The 4th Annual Chic Awearness presented by Dr. Gregg P. Allen, M.D. and eviCore healthcare,
raised more than $95,000 on
Monday, September 27, 2016 at Prima
to benefit the T.J. Martell Foundation's ovarian cancer research
program at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. The city of
Nashville recognized Chic
Awearness and Ovarian Cancer Month by illuminating the Korean War
Veterans Memorial Bridge a stunning teal.
Hosted by News Channel 5's Carrie
Sharp, the event brought together more than 200 guests who
arrived in "teal" attire to enjoy "butterfly kiss" cocktails and
hor d'oeuvres, an informal fall fashion show by Levy's, shop in the
silent auction and hear inspiring words from ovarian cancer
survivors.
Chic Awearness is a fundraising event that was started in 2013
by ovarian cancer survivor and advocate Marci Houff.
"Nashville is now supporting
and embracing the huge void in spreading awareness on a deadly
women's disease. We will one day defeat ovarian cancer
through funding of seminal research."
Dr. Ron Alvarez, chair of the
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center spoke about
the signs of ovarian cancer and how research funding for the
disease is dramatically underfunded. Ovarian cancer is the
leading cause of death from all gynecological cancers and the fifth
leading cause of cancer related deaths among women. The American
Cancer Society estimated that almost 15,000 women in the United States will die of ovarian cancer
in 2016.
In addition to Chic Awearness, Elan Hair celebrated their
20th Anniversary by creating a special "Hair-Raising"
program to raise funds and awareness for ovarian cancer
research. Fundraising from product sales, stylists who gave a
portion of their fees and an auction raised over $39,000 for the cause. During the week of
September 12-17, local salons also
participated in Salon Week which created an opportunity for salons
and vendors across Middle Tennessee to participate by donating a
percentage from services, products sold and inviting clients to
make contributions.
