AstraZeneca PLC (AZN.LN) said Sunday that there is no threat to the supply of medicines to patients at the moment as a result of the flying ban over most of northern and central Europe.

"We do have some product at airports awaiting the lifting of flight restrictions, but at the moment there is no threat to the supply of medicines to patients," AstraZeneca told Dow Jones Newswires in an email.

"As you'd expect, we have robust contingency plans in place to ensure continued supply of important medicines in circumstances like this. We will continue to assess the situation and are in a position to implement alternative shipping arrangements on a case-by-case basis if required," the company added.

AstraZeneca didn't provide any further information.

A spreading ash cloud from an Icelandic volcano is responsible for the biggest disruption to air travel since the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

The affected airspace includes Austria, Belgium, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, most of France, most of Germany, Hungary, Ireland, northern Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine and the U.K.
