Company Earns EPA ENERGY STAR® Designation for
Rapid City Office
What’s smart, clean and green all over? Working towards a more
sustainable future.
For the seventh year in a row, Assurant, Inc. is recognized for
efforts to reduce its environmental footprint by earning the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR certification
at one or more of its facilities. A provider of specialty
protection products and services, the Company recently earned the
designation for its energy conservation efforts for one of two
buildings at its Rapid City, South Dakota campus facilities.
“While this marks the first year Assurant earned ENERGY STAR
certification for Rapid City, the Company is taking steps to
improve our environmental performance across all of our facilities,
with a goal of certifying all of our main office locations by the
end of 2016,” said President and CEO Alan B. Colberg. “The Rapid
City facility management team’s work combined with our employees’
efforts to reduce energy consumption, recycle and reduce waste,
highlight the Company’s commitment of improving the communities
where we live and work.”
Since 2009, Assurant has conserved electrical energy usage
across the enterprise as part of the Company’s ongoing efforts to
reduce its environmental footprint. Assurant was recognized by the
EPA as a member of the 2014 ENERGY STAR Certification Nation for
certifying six buildings. These buildings use an average of 35
percent less energy than typical buildings and release 35 percent
less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Energy efficient strategies that Assurant’s Rapid City facility
management team employs include maintaining consistent building
temperature levels, use of motion sensors to control lighting and
replacing standard light bulbs with energy efficient ones whenever
possible. The team closely manages heating and cooling to align
with business operating hours, powering down when the building is
not in use.
ENERGY STAR certification signifies that buildings perform in
the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy
efficiency and meets strict energy efficiency performance levels
set by the EPA.
