A $30 million settlement will ensure progress in the cleanup of
the Sutton Brook Disposal Area Superfund Site in Tewksbury, Mass.,
government authorities said Tuesday.
The agreement resolves federal and state liability claims
against 49 potentially responsible parties. Under the settlement,
20 parties will be responsible for carrying out work recommended by
the Environmental Protection Agency in 2007. The work includes
excavation and consolidation of contaminated soils and sediments,
construction of a multilayered impermeable cap, capture and
treatment of contaminated groundwater, institutional controls and
long-term monitoring. The total cost is estimated at $29.9
million.
The 20 parties also will pay for the state's past costs,
oversight costs for the EPA and Massachusetts Department of
Environmental Protection, and $1.65 million to the Fish and
Wildlife Service and the state for natural resource damages claims
stemming from injuries to groundwater and wetlands.
The parties include BASF SE (BASFY, BAS.XE), Browning-Ferris
Industries Inc., BTU International Inc. (BTUI), E.I. DuPont De
Nemours & Co. (DD), Honeywell International Inc. (HON),
Raytheon Co. (RTN); Sears Holdings Corp. (SHLD), Textron Inc. (TXT)
and Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ).
