Shares of America’s number two car company, Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F), lost 2.4% to $9.86, barely better than its two-year low. The stock is down 38% over the past two years, while the S&P 500 is 25% higher. The share price of Ford’s cross-town rival, General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM), has gained 9% in that time.

Ford had the opportunity to become the U.S. electric vehicle (EV) unit sales winner based on the potential success of the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning, which carried the names of the company’s most iconic brands. The F-150 full-size pickup has been the best-selling vehicle in America for over four decades. Ford began to produce the Mustang in 1964, 60 years ago. The brand equity built by each is extraordinary; the company needs to be concerned that the EV versions tarnish that.

What occurred is that Ford has never sold many EVs. Sales of the electric versions of the Mustang and F-150 are only a few thousand a month in the United States, compared to the total monthly new car sales of about 170,000. This is a disaster, and Ford may not recover from it at all.

In September 2021, CEO Jim Farley said Ford would have invested over $30 billion in EVs through the end of 2025. He also said in 2023 that it would produce 600,000 EVs annually in 2024. Recently, the company returned to higher production levels of profitable products like its gasoline-powered Super Duty pickup. Management realized that, while it lost over $1 billion a quarter on its EV business, it needed legacy gasoline-powered product sales to be strong for the company to be profitable.

No one will be able to say for sure what undermines Ford’s EV plans. Some say it made EVs that were not as good as those from Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA). Others say Ford changed the prices of its EVs too many times, and consumers have become confused and unwilling to pay a premium for EVs compared to gasoline-powered models. Yet others will say the EV market became crowded as the world’s major car companies battled for U.S. market share.

Ford’s stock is unlikely to recover most of the ground it has lost over the past two years.

Ford Motor Co (NYSE:F) stock missed second-quarter profit expectations due to warranty costs, but beat on revenue. The automaker also stuck to its 2024 profit forecast and touted Ford+ restructuring plans. F was last seen down 16.6% to trade at $11.39, with price-target cuts coming from Goldman Sachs and BofA Global Research to $12 and $20, respectively.

F is on track for its third-straight loss and biggest single-day percentage drop since May 2009. The security is pivoting lower from a July 18, 52-week high of $14.85, earlier hitting its lowest level since January. In the last 12 months, Ford Motor stock dropped more than 15%.

Drilling down to today's options activity, 93,000 calls and 181,000 puts have exchanged hands so far, which is seven times the volume typically seen at this point. The most active contract is the weekly 7/26 13-strike put, but new positions are being opened at the 11.50-strike put in that series.

Short-term options traders have been more bearish than usual. This is per the security's Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio (SOIR) of 1.15 that sits in 91st percentile of annual readings.

CNBC says Ford (NYSE: F) was among the S&P’s most “overbought” stocks this week. That means the shares have risen too fast to be justified by the company’s financial fundamentals and will likely sell off soon.

Ford’s shares have done well recently. They have been up 24% in the last six months, compared to a rise of only 14% in the broader market. And the news may not justify that. It has been mixed. Management said it would convert a Canadian plant from EV manufacturing to making its Super Duty trucks. The move is an admission that Ford has gone too far in its EV investment. However, its pickups are hugely profitable. This profitable move could have been enough to move the stock.

But why the “overbought” designation? Perhaps it’s because of upcoming earnings or Ford’s confusing long-term plans. The earnings will likely show steady revenue and EPS, but Ford continues to post huge losses in its EV unit.

Another nagging question is whether Ford’s EV investment was made too soon, pegged as high as $30 billion. Ford has a large capacity to build EVs, which were expensive to create, and there is little evidence that the money spent was spent wisely.

Ford’s early move into EVs involved using its famous Mustang sports car brand to launch an EV crossover and its famous pickup brand F-150 to launch an EV version called Lightning. “Overbought” signals that Ford’s management’s investment has exceeded its sales possibilities. The F-150 is one of the best-selling vehicles in history.

Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F), reeling from its electric vehicle (EV) failures and a struggling stock price, posted an extraordinarily bad performance in the new 2024 Axios Harris Poll 100 reputation rankings. Most other car brands rated did much better.

The study’s complex methodology involves finding America’s 100 most visible brands. The researchers then create a “reputational quotient” based on nine “dimensions of reputation” (the full methodology is here). Versions of the study have been published since 1999.

The Rankings

Ford ranked 55th on the list with a rating score of 73.6. The highest score among the 100 was Nvidia at 81.2. The lowest score was the Trump Organization at 54.0.

Ford’s score dropped the second most among all brands on the list, tied with Anheuser-Busch (rating of 69.1). Both posted a ranking that dropped 23 positions from the prior survey. Anheuser-Busch fell to the 80th spot among all brands rated. The only company with a worse performance was Starbucks (69.5), whose rank fell 29 places to the 77th position.

The car brand that rated highest was Honda. It took the seventh spot in the rating at 79.3, up six positions from the year before. The second-highest car company was Toyota, with a score of 78.6. Its ranking fell six places to 12th position.

Because the methodology does not describe why each company had the rating it did, that is left to speculation. News about Ford’s withdrawing from the EV business might be a factor. Its stock price is down 1% this year. The S&P 500 is up 11% over the same period. Toyota’s stock price has risen 18% since the start of the year.

The figures are straightforward. Over the past two years, Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) shares have gone down 14%. Meanwhile, shares of General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) have risen 13%, the S&P 500 is up 19%, and Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM) stock has increased 36%.

What Went Wrong?

Among all the major car companies, Ford has been the worst at balancing the rise of electric vehicles (EVs), which has slowed considerably, and the lasting appeal of gasoline-powered cars. Ford put billions of dollars into EVs, as did many other carmakers, but its failure stands out. It used two of its most iconic brands to sell EVs, and both moves failed. The nation’s best-selling vehicle, the F-150, was introduced as an EV as the F-150 Lightning. The Mustang sports car, introduced in 1964, became the Mustang Mach-E crossover. Each of these sells only a few thousand units a month.

As Toyota strategically decided that hybrids would be the wave of the near future, Ford stuck with its EV plans. As Ford brought out more EV models, it changed the prices of these several times because it could not accurately track production costs. It has finally started to push hybrids more aggressively.

Crosstown rival GM did not spend the brand equity of its most popular cars to sell EVs. It chased Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) as aggressively as Ford did. Still, it was slower and more cautious as it brought out EV versions of popular models, including the Chevy Silverado, which competes with the F-150. (See how much money Tesla makes every minute.)

Ford CEO Bill Ford said the F-150 Lightning was the most important product launch of his tenure at the company. That singled him out to the market as being “all in” on an EV future. However, Ford’s EV sales are more disappointing than those of any major manufacturer that competes with its model lines. Perhaps Bill Ford should have kept his opinions to himself. The markets might have been less disappointed.

Ford Stock Has 27% Upside, According to 1 Wall Street Analyst

Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) appears to be throttling back its efforts to shift toward producing more fully electric vehicles (EVs), and one analyst thinks this strategy makes good sense. This week, Barclays analyst Dan Levy boosted his price target on the automaker while continuing to say Ford shares should be bought.

Levy edged his price target for Ford stock up $1 to $16, but that would still represent a 27% gain over the next 12 months or so from Friday's closing price. That positive sentiment comes a week after Ford reported that its first-quarter U.S. EV sales soared by 86% year over year.

The analyst thinks that Ford stock can go higher despite those EV sales, not because of them.

EV sales soar

Ford reported selling a little over 20,000 EVs in the first quarter domestically, so the large percentage increase reflects a jump from a low base. But it still bucks the industry trend. Overall EV sales in the U.S. grew 8% year over year in 2024's first quarter, which was much lower than the 40% year-over-year growth seen in the fourth quarter.

Ford is also working to boost sales of EVs already produced. This week the company announced it would drop prices on its F-150 Lightning all-electric pickup truck by as much as $5,500. That comes after the company slowed production on the vehicle to offset rising inventories.

Ford's advantage versus its competitors is that it can be flexible beyond its EV offerings. That includes a growing lineup of hybrid electric vehicles as well as its Transit commercial vans. Its Q1 sales totals for hybrids and Transit vans both set new records.

As the demand for EVs has slowed, that strategy looks to be working. It's also why the automaker's stock looks to be a good buy at recent levels. With its earnings and free cash flow expected to grow further this year, this analyst call is a good one.

Ford recall on Broncos, Escapes over fuel leak, engine fire risk prompt feds to open probe

Federal auto regulators have announced a probe into a Ford recall of nearly 43,000 automobiles following an error with cracked fuel injectors they say can cause gas leaks and ignite engine fires.

In a summary report dated Thursday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration wrote it was opening an investigation into a recall of Ford Bronco and Escape vehicle by the automaker headquartered in Dearborn, Michigan.

According to a letter addressed to Ford from the NHTSA, the error impacted about 42,652 (or 1%) of the SUVs produced in 2022 and 2023.

The safety regulator posted documents online announcing the probe just two days after the recall was made public.

As of Friday, no injuries connected to the recall had been reported by the NHTSA.

What Ford models are being recalled?

The following Ford models are affected in the recent recall:

22,270 Bronco Sport vehicles from 2022 and 2023

20,382 Escape vehicles from 2022

All the recalled SUVs have 1.5-liter engines, NTHSA said.

What should I do if my Ford Bronco or Escape is recalled?

According to the federal investigation announcement, owners can take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have a drain tube installed in the vehicle at no cost.

The remedy also includes a free engine control software update to detect a pressure drop in the fuel injection system, the federal regulator reported. Should that occur, the software will disable the high pressure fuel pump, reduce engine power and cut temps in the engine compartment. Owners also will get a "seek service" message, documents show.

But according to safety regulators, the automakers remedy enables fuel to drain from a cylinder head hole to the ground below the vehicle.

"The recall remedy does not include replacement of the cracked fuel injector," NTHSA wrote.

When did Ford notify owners about the recall?

Dealers, the NHTSA reported, were notified on March 11 about the recall.

Ford said it began notifying owners whether their vehicle is affected on April 1.

Drivers can check the NHTSA website to see if their vehicle has been affected by the recall.

Ford's number for this recall is 24S16. This recall is an expansion of previous recall: 22V-859.

A friend of mine was a mechanic at Acura Boston for 20 odd years. Last year he quit because all the problems with the electronics.

He took a night maintenance job at a soup company until he retires in a few years. No pressure compared to fixing junk cars.

Personally, I don't think so at this time. Sales are slipping as vehicles are way, way, overpriced and very few people can afford to buy. Even used vehicles are way overvalued and overpriced. I have driven thousands of miles over my lifetime and so many people truly have purchased trucks that they misuse or don't fully use like they were meant to be.

Just my opinion, but I think and believe that there is way too much junk (electronics) going into vehicles. This, in my opinion, can bring down the operational value of any vehicle. I think the electronic fuel injection, when it first came out, was a good thing, as it helped in regulating better fuel usage. Other than than, if anyone really wanted to add more electronics, they could do it aftermarket. Vehicles today are way to expensive and many are totally overvalued. That's just my opinion.

According to the company's CFO, "things are looking pretty good" in the vehicle market. At last check, F was up 4% at $12.94. The stock has been middling between $12 and $13 since early February, up 7.7% since the start of 2024.

Ford stock is also seeing attractively price premium at the moment. Its Schaeffer's Volatility Index (SVI) of 28% ranks in the low 6th percentile of its annual range, meaning options traders are pricing in low volatility expectations. The equity tends to outperform said expectations too, per its Schaeffer's Volatility Scorecard (SVS) of 80 out of 100.

In the past decade, shares of Ford (NYSE: F) have produced a total return, including dividends, of just 30%. If one would've just invested in an S&P 500 index fund, their money would've more than tripled.

Ford bulls are hoping the next few years will end up differently. As of this writing, this auto stock trades 67% below its all-time high. Consequently, the forward P/E ratio is 6.5, which might be enticing for some investors.

So, is it time to buy Ford shares?

Latest business results

Shares of Ford jumped 6% right after it reported 2023 fourth-quarter financial results. It's safe to say that investors were pleased with how the business wrapped up the year.

Ford posted a 4.5% revenue increase in Q4 and an 11.4% rise for the full year. That yearly gain is a much faster clip than investors are used to seeing from this mature company. Ford also reported diluted earnings per share of $1.08 for the full year, a huge improvement from the $0.49 loss in 2022.

The results were good enough for the leadership team to approve a special one-time $0.18 dividend. The stock already yields a 4.95% payout, so this is music to the ears of income investors.

Last year, management made the decision to delay $12 billion of EV (electric vehicles)-related investments due to soft demand and pricing trends. That's not an encouraging sign for a segment that was supposed to be a key business driver in the years ahead. Ford model e, the EV division, reported just a 2% sales increase in Q4, with the operating loss coming in at $1.6 billion.

A bright spot has been Ford's commercial segment, which sells vehicles to enterprise customers. Revenue here was up 19% in 2023, with operating profit totaling $7.2 billion.

Wall Street consensus analyst estimates call for company revenue to rise by 5.8% in 2024. So, there is healthy demand that's forecasted on the horizon. Add this to the $2 billion in cost cuts that executives have planned, and it's understandable for shareholders to be optimistic.

Focus on the bigger picture

Bullish investors have a lot to cheer about right now. Ford appears to be performing well as of late, it pays a hefty dividend, and the stock is cheap. However, I don't think it makes for a solid investment over the long term.

For starters, just look at how intensely competitive the industry is. Ford battles it out against scaled domestic and international rivals that compete all on the same factors, like pricing and design, to draw in consumers. In the EV world, there are deep-pocketed and innovative industry rivals that aim to be at the forefront of the shift in the auto industry. This setup will continue to make it difficult for Ford to achieve outsized success.

Because Ford sells expensive vehicles, which are likely a person's second-biggest purchase (behind their home), the business is heavily reliant on a favorable macro backdrop in order to prosper. Consumers can delay buying a new car when times get tough.

Yes, the economy spends more time growing than contracting, but it's concerning how much changes in interest rates can impact Ford's financials. If the U.S. enters a recession in the near term, it will certainly hurt the business. The fact that no one can accurately predict what direction the economy is headed in adds uncertainty and risk.

I'm also not a fan of Ford's growth trends. Revenue in 2023 was 20% higher than 2013's total. That translates to a compound annual rate of just 1.8%. Given the mature nature of the industry, there's no reason to have confidence that things will pick up from this pace.

Ford hasn't been a worthwhile investment in the past. I think this will continue to be the case, so I'm not buying the stock.
