ISTANBUL--Turkish mobile telephone operator Turkcell Iletisim Hizmetleri AS (TCELL.IS) said Thursday that tax authorities had imposed a 527.7 million Turkish lira ($245 million) tax demand and fine because of a special communication tax for the 2008-2012 period.

In a statement to the Istanbul stock exchange, the company said it will appeal the tax demand and fine. All types of installation, transfer and telecommunication services provided by mobile phone operators are subject to a special communication tax.

At 1330 GMT, Turkcell shares were trading 3.6% lower at TRY10.94 amid an overall lower Istanbul market, which was down 2.26%.
