Massey Energy Co. (MEE) has been hit with a total of 81
citations or orders for safety violations found during the most
recent special inspections by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health
Administration, the agency announced Monday.
The citations or orders against Massey are among 166 issued at
eight mines and quarries in five states during the February round
of inspections.
The MSHA, part of the Labor Department, began the inspections
after 29 miners were killed in an explosion at Massey's Upper Big
Branch mine in West Virginia on April 5, 2010.
A spokesman for Massey, based in Richmond, Va., had no immediate
comment, the Associated Press reported. The company agreed in
January to sell itself to rival miner Alpha Natural Resources Inc.
(ANR) in a deal valued at $7.1 billion.
