The U.S. Navy is warning more than 130,000 sailors of a data breach, after a laptop belonging to an employee of Navy contractor Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. was compromised.

The Navy learned of the incident on Oct. 27 and determined on Tuesday that names and Social Security numbers of 134,386 current and former sailors were accessed by "unknown individuals," the Navy said Wednesday in a statement.

"We are in the early stages of investigating and are working quickly to identify and take care of those affected by this breach," the Navy said.

The Navy said it had no evidence of "misuse" of the compromised information. The statement didn't specify how they information was compromised.

Affected employees will be notified over the next weeks via telephone, letter and email, and the Navy is "reviewing credit monitoring services options," for those affected.

HP Enterprise didn't respond to an email seeking comment.
