New Jersey American Water's Varley Speaks on the Need for Continuous Investment in the State's Water and Wastewater Infrastructure

New Jersey’s water and wastewater infrastructure needs continuous investment, regardless of who owns it. That was the message New Jersey American Water President William M. Varley delivered today as part of a panel sponsored by the New Jersey Business & Industry Association on the condition of the state’s aging infrastructure.

“Whether or not we provide service to an area, I think that we all agree that the water and wastewater infrastructure is critical to New Jersey’s shared economic vitality and survival,” Varley said. “And that requires dedicating the necessary capital resources to constantly maintain and renew it as it ages.”

In less than three years, New Jersey American Water, with a system that has about 9,000 miles of mains, has invested more than $775 million in infrastructure upgrades and replacements, including more than 160 miles of new water mains. “Our continuous investment not only ensures customer access to clean reliable water service, but is also instrumental in generating both jobs and revenue in the state,” Varley said.

New Jersey American Water, a wholly owned subsidiary of American Water (NYSE: AWK) is the largest investor-owned water utility in the state, providing high-quality and reliable water and/or wastewater services to approximately 2.5 million people. Founded in 1886, American Water is the largest and most geographically diverse publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company. With headquarters in Voorhees, N.J., the company employs more than 6,800 dedicated professionals who provide drinking water, wastewater and other related services to approximately 15 million people in 47 states, as well as parts of Canada.
