Two BGE Employees Receive Company’s Highest Recognition for Volunteerism and Commitment to Community

Company donates $15,000 to the local nonprofits
they support
BGE and its parent company, Exelon, recently honored two
outstanding BGE employees at the annual Energy for the Community
Awards ceremony in Baltimore. The Energy for the Community Awards
are the company’s highest honor recognizing employees for their
exceptional commitment to volunteering and advancing our
communities.
The BGE honorees were:
- Bakhtavar Mody Wykpisz, manager of
Support Services for BGE for her work with the Believe In Tomorrow
Children’s Foundation
- Carolyn (Sue) Ziegler, senior training
specialist for BGE for her work with – The Friends of the Howard
County Library Inc.
At the event, BGE awarded $15,000 in grants to the two local
nonprofit organizations where these employees volunteer.
“Bakhtavar and Sue are two great examples of the many BGE
employees who lend their time, talent, and support to causes that
make a difference in the community,” said Valencia McClure, vice
president of governmental and external affairs and corporate
relations for BGE. “Their passion for volunteering touches the
lives of so many people across central Maryland.”
Now in its 11th year, Exelon, through the Energy for the
Community Awards, is recognizing 24 employees across its family of
companies and donating $200,000 in their honor to nonprofit
organizations in the Baltimore, Chicago, Philadelphia and
Washington D.C. areas. In 2016, Exelon employees volunteered
171,341 hours in the community, and the company donated $5.8
million to 2,785 different charities.
Bakhtavar Mody Wykpisz, manager of Support Services – Believe
In Tomorrow Children’s Foundation
The Believe In Tomorrow Children’s Foundation is a national
charity based in Baltimore, Md. Its mission is to provide families
whose children are undergoing critical care medical treatment with
hospital and respite housing that is uniquely designed and managed
to ease the stress that families endure throughout their child’s
treatment process. Bakhtavar has been volunteering with the
organization for nine years and her support of the Family Supper
program has real, tangible, and direct impact on the children and
families it serves. Bakhtavar has organized and served more than 90
family suppers at the flagship Hospital Housing property, the
Children's House at Johns Hopkins, helping to feed 656 families.
The award from Exelon will allow Believe In Tomorrow to add a wheel
chair lift for the Believe In Tomorrow House at St. Casimir which
is located in the Canton area of Baltimore.
Carolyn (Sue) Ziegler, senior training specialist –
The Friends of the Howard County Library Inc.
Howard County Library System (HCLS) Project Literacy is a highly
successful adult basic education initiative made possible by grant
funding from the Maryland State Department of Labor, Licensing and
Regulation, Friends of the Howard County Library, and Exelon. Sue
has been volunteering with Project Literacy since 1990. Through 26
years of one-on-one teaching with the program, she has acquired
extensive knowledge on teaching strategies, characteristics of
adult students, and obstacles that could impede their learning. The
award from Exelon will be used for classroom materials, and to
supplement the costs of tutoring hours. There is a waiting list for
students each year, and with the increase of funds, the program
will be able to add placements.
In 2016, BGE employees volunteered more than 20,000 hours with
local community organizations and served as board members for more
than 130 local nonprofits. By giving their time and talent, BGE
employees help these organizations achieve their goals and make our
communities a better place to live and work.
