Mindspeed
Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: MSPD), the industry leader in
technology for small cell base stations, has announced new customers and
demonstrations, unveiled the world’s first long-term evolution (LTE)
femtocell, was the only company to demonstrate working small cell
time-division (TD)-LTE and frequency division duplexing LTE (FDD-LTE)
solutions, and showcased 39 different commercial small cell products at
the recently-concluded Mobile
World Congress 2012 event in Barcelona, Spain.
“This has been yet another fantastic show for us, and one where we’ve
made many key announcements,” said Raouf Y. Halim, chief executive
officer at Mindspeed. “Mobile World Congress was also Mindspeed’s first
public appearance after our acquisition of Picochip, and we’ve been able
to show just how much of a lead we now have in the small cell space.
Small cells are now playing an essential role in many of the world’s
biggest networks, and Mindspeed’s technology makes it possible.”
At the show Mindspeed announced:
-
A study showing that Barcelona will need 40,000
small cells by 2015 in order to deliver genuinely world-class,
ubiquitous LTE mobile broadband service. The research was carried out
by Dr. Doug Pulley, Mindspeed’s chief technology officer for wireless
and customer premises equipment (CPE).
-
A collaboration with JUNI
to jointly develop
LTE femtocells and other small cell dual-mode 3G/LTE solutions.
-
An announcement from Korea
Telecom (KT) that it has selected
Mindspeed®’s Transcede® System-on-Chip (SoC) baseband processors
for its LTE small cell development. The collaboration supports the
carrier’s migration to dual mode (LTE and 3G)
-
A demonstration with Hong
Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) of
the industry's first commercial-grade, production-ready TD-LTE small
cell reference design. There was also a demonstration of a tier
one customer’s TD-LTE small cell base station using Mindspeed’s
Transcede SoC baseband processor.
-
A co-operation
with Contela,
Inc. to jointly develop advanced LTE femtocells and other
small cell dual mode 3G/LTE solutions.
-
A demonstration
with Radisys
Corporation (NASDAQ: RSYS), of LTE base station advances –
specifically, a commercially-available eNodeB small cell reference
design based on a single SoC.
-
An announcement from TEKTELIC
Communications that the company has launched
what it claims is the industry’s smallest fully integrated micro
eNodeB, which was developed using Mindspeed technology and software
from the Aricent Group.
“Once again, we’ve shown off more customer products and more real-world
deployments for infrastructure than any competitor,” said Rupert Baines,
vice president of marketing at Mindspeed. “Last year we saw a lot of
operators and vendors start seriously talking about small cells; this
year has been all about demonstrating real products, with small cells
using our technology even providing coverage for Mobile World Congress
attendees at the Fira Montjuïc exhibition center.
“We have built on our industry lead in LTE, with more than two dozen
customer engagements, commercial products from JUNI, Contela, Tektelic
and more – and now real deployments with KT and others. Finally, we were
the only company to demonstrate operational LTE FDD and TD-LTE small
cells, another area in which Mindspeed is setting the pace for the
industry.”
At the show Mindspeed exhibited:
-
39 unique femtocells and small cells, including those in commercial
service with service providers from around the world for HSPA, LTE and
TD-SCDMA.
-
Real-world ecosystem participation from Mindspeed collaborators.
-
Six different TD-synchronous code division multiple access (SCDMA)
femtocells and picocells for the Chinese market.
-
HSPA and LTE picocell-class products for enterprise, metro and rural
markets, with power levels ranging from 250mW to 2 x 5W.
-
Seven different LTE small cells, including designs from KT, JUNI and
Tektelic.
