- Over 70% Indonesian men (80 million)
are chain smokers
- Around 400,000 Indonesians die
annually due to smoking-related conditions; of these, 6% are
passive smokers
- Three-fourths of 6.5 million
vehicles in Jakarta do not pass
the emission test
Indonesia is the fourth most
populous country in the world with almost 5% of the total deaths
triggered by respiratory diseases like Chronic Obstructive
Pulmonary Disorder (COPD) and Asthma and Obstructive Sleep Apnea
(OSA). The Indonesian respiratory device market is forecast to grow
at a CAGR of 9% till 2020. The market comprises diagnostic devices
such as spirometers and peak flow meters, monitoring devices such
as capnographs and pulse oximeters; therapeutic devices such as
oxygen concentrators and nebulisers; Continuous Positive Airway
Pressure (CPAP) devices, and disposables such as oxygen masks,
nasal cannulae and CPAP masks.

The growth in Indonesia market
is backed by a rise in smoking habits, increased air pollution,
enhanced life expectancy, improved healthcare infrastructure and
government initiatives. Though a considerable population of
Indonesia is young, due to the
rise in smoking habits accompanied by improved life expectancy,
chances of developing COPD and other chronic respiratory diseases
will rise considerably, which will increase the need for
respiratory management and diagnostic devices like nebulisers, peak
flow meters, CPAP and spirometers in the near future.
Jakarta is the largest and most
polluted city in Indonesia and has
the highest number of asthma cases. The air in Jakarta is highly polluted as most vehicles do
not pass the emission test that has resulted in an increase in the
number of asthma cases, especially in children and a resultant rise
in demand for nebulisers. The demand for disposable devices has
also increased due to a surge for disposables over reusable ones.
Indonesia has a wide network of
primary healthcare centres called Puskesmas with at least one
Puskesma for every 30,000 people. All these centres need basic
respiratory devices such as nebulisers, peak flow meters and pulse
oximeters in order to provide better healthcare services to the
patients. The government insurance programs like Jamkesmas and
Universal Health Insurance Coverage to provide free basic
healthcare services to all the citizens will also drive the
market.
"The Indonesia market is
underpenetrated and therefore offers attractive growth
opportunities especially for foreign manufactures as it lacks
domestic manufacturing facilities. However, low awareness and
affordability may restrain the market growth to some extent," said
Uday Sai Ranjan Avula, analyst at ABMRG.
Key players in Indonesian respiratory devices market are AirSep
Corporation, a division of Chart Industries, CareFusion Corp,
Covidien plc, DeVilbiss Healthcare LLC, Fisher & Paykel
Healthcare Corp Ltd, Invacare Corporation, Omron Healthcare, Inc.,
a division of Omron Corporation, Philips Respironics, Inc., a
division of Koninklijke Philips N.V. and ResMed Inc.
