FDA-cleared system for percutaneous surgery offers the strength and functionality of a traditional 5 mm minimally invasive tool but requires fewer trocars and potentially causes less trauma

Percutaneous insertions mean no trocars are required for initial access

Compared to traditional laparoscopic surgery, percutaneous surgery can be even less invasive

Patients expected to heal with minimal scarring

Teleflex Incorporated (NYSE: TFX), a leading global provider of medical devices for critical care and surgery, has announced today that its new Percuvance™ Percutaneous Surgical System, which provides performance similar to larger tools commonly used in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgeries, was percutaneously inserted into a human for the first time in a procedure at Cleveland Clinic to evaluate the surgical tool.

The Percuvance System has recently received FDA clearance and CE Mark approval and represents a significant advance in minimally invasive surgery (MIS). The basis of the system is a less than 3 mm diameter shaft that, when connected to an introducer tool tip, can be inserted percutaneously through the skin. The introducer tool tip can then be exchanged outside the body for a wide variety of 5 mm interchangeable surgical tool tips. The shaft is sufficiently strong to hold structures, and surgeons can use its interchangeable tool tips to grasp, cut and manipulate tissue.

In addition, procedures using the Percuvance™ System require fewer trocars and cause less trauma for the patient.

“The first human procedures with the Percuvance™ System are a major milestone in our strategy of developing platform technologies that will broaden Teleflex’s portfolio with novel products that provide clinical efficacy, enhance patients’ experiences and lower the overall cost of care,” says John Tushar, President and General Manager of Teleflex Surgical. “We believe our system has the potential to transform the standard of care from traditional laparoscopy to percutaneous surgery.”

Percutaneous Surgery: A simple stepping stone to even less invasive minimally invasive surgery (MIS)

The Company’s optimism is grounded in two facts:

1. Traditional laparoscopic surgery accounts for approximately 94 percent of all nonrobotic laparoscopic surgical procedures, and 2.9 million laparoscopic procedures are performed each year in the US.1

2. The transition to even less invasive MIS has been slowed by barriers to adoption. Percutaneous surgery eliminates these barriers.

According to surgeons interviewed during the product's development, the Percuvance™ System has a short learning curve. It requires few adjustments to surgeons’ current techniques as well as much smaller incisions. Plus, the system does not have the costs associated with capital, service and fully disposable technologies.

About the Percuvance™ System

Teleflex’s Percuvance™ Percutaneous Surgical System is intended to manipulate tissue. It includes components that introduce a variety of instrument configurations into the abdominal cavity and requires a smaller incision site than traditional laparoscopic surgery. It offers a reusable handle that is compatible with interchangeable instrument tips, which include graspers, scissors and dissectors. Unlike other laparoscopic devices, the Percuvance™ System affords a percutaneous insertion into the patient without the use of a trocar. It is indicated for the means to penetrate soft tissue to access certain areas of the abdomen and used to grasp, hold and manipulate tissue during laparoscopic surgery. The Percuvance™ System will become widely commercially available in 2016.

Teleflex Portfolio of Percutaneous Solutions

The Percuvance™ System complements another key product, MiniLap® Percutaneous Surgical System, in Teleflex’s growing portfolio of innovative yet practical solutions for percutaneous surgery. The MiniLap® System provides delivery and function through an integrated, disposable 2.3 mm device. Like the Percuvance™ System, the MiniLap® System does not require a trocar and makes minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures less invasive.

Initially, both the Percuvance™ and MiniLap® Systems will play supporting roles in common, less complex procedures in general surgery (e.g., lap cholecystectomies or appendectomies) and gynecological surgery. As they gain experience, surgeons also may find these devices valuable in more complex abdominal procedures. Teleflex expects to add more tools to the next generation Percuvance™ System and envisions it having an increasingly important role in a wide range of common and complex procedures.

“Teleflex Percutaneous Solutions comprise an innovative and unparalleled portfolio of devices to perform percutaneous surgery,” commented Benson Smith, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Teleflex. “We believe they fill an important clinical and economic need in the surgical field and expect they will contribute to our growth.”
