NORTH PALM BEACH, Fla., Feb. 10, 2016 /PRNewswire-iReach/ --Dr. Thomas Pane, a double board-certified plastic surgeon and founder of Atlantic Coast Aesthetics in North Palm Beach, Florida, has just created a new video and blog that discusses tummy tuck post-op complications.

Through his work as a plastic surgeon, Dr. Pane is devoted to helping set his patients' minds at ease and answering all of their questions. To share his insight with as many people as possible, Dr. Pane recently launched his Question of the Week program.

When he received an email from a person who had a tummy tuck in December of 2015 and is now experiencing severe abdominal swelling, Dr. Pane knew he needed to devote both a blog and a video to this potentially serious issue. The person, who was treated by a different plastic surgeon, was concerned about developing a seroma or hematoma.

As Dr. Pane noted in the new blog, his first question is about the patient's surgeon and if he or she is unduly concerned about the swelling. In some cases, post-operative swelling is normal and expected in the flap area.

A seroma, Dr. Pane explained, is a buildup of fluid that can occur beneath the flap area. The fluid is usually benign and has no or little blood content. A hematoma is basically a "runaway bruise" or pooling of blood in a given area. While they may look similar, Dr. Pane noted that a seroma is usually treated during a tummy tuck with drains, while a hematoma may require surgery to fix.

"The first order of business is to get a clinical examination to ensure that the problem is accurately diagnosed and treated," Dr. Pane wrote, adding that the wrong kind of treatment in these cases can sometimes be worse than no treatment at all, so getting the problem looked into promptly must always be the first step.

"If the first doctor's opinion and/or method of treatment does not satisfy the patient, it is always a good idea to seek a second opinion as to the type and severity of the problem."

Since the person who emailed the question was only six weeks post-op at the time, Dr. Pane said he was not as concerned with the swelling as he would be if it was happening three months or more after the surgery.

"For the patient's own safety and peace of mind it is a good idea to have the area examined," he wrote.
