WASHINGTON, March 2, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/
-- Following the release of the report outlining
recommendations from President Obama's Task Force on
21st Century Community Policing, National League of
Cities (NLC) President Ralph Becker,
mayor, Salt Lake City, Utah,
issued the following statement:
"On behalf of the National League of Cities' members, I want to
thank the President's Task Force on 21st Century
Community Policing for making a set of recommendations designed to
improve the relationship and trust between police and the
communities they protect. I encourage city leaders to carefully
consider the report's recommendations and convene community
stakeholders to help chart a path forward that improves community
policing practices.
"Local officials have an essential role in creating a culture of
transparency and accountability that fosters trust between police
and the people they serve. That includes driving collaboration
among law enforcement, community members and interest groups. And
ultimately, city officials and law enforcement professionals must
work together to implement policies and strategies that reinforce
the importance of community engagement in managing public
safety.
"The recommendations outlined in the report can't be enacted by
a single mayor, councilmember or community member. However, by
facilitating these stakeholder conversations, we can help foster
the mutual trust and understanding that is critical for successful
outcomes in our communities."
The National League of Cities (NLC) is dedicated to helping
city leaders build better communities. NLC is a resource and
advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more
than 218 million Americans.
