Pharma Collegē web-based game nominated as Best
Postsecondary Learning Solution
Chamberlain College of Nursing’s Pharma Collegē web-based game
application has been named a finalist for the 2015 SIIA Education
CODiE Award in the “Best Postsecondary Learning Solution” category.
The SIIA CODiE Awards recognize a product’s innovation, vision and
overall industry impact, and are the only peer-recognized awards of
their kind in the content, education and software industries. Other
category finalists include Adobe Systems, Inc., Atomic Learning,
Pearson Education, uCertify and Vista Higher Learning.
Leila McKinney, DNP, MSN, APRN, NP-C, past president of
Chamberlain’s Atlanta campus, led the creation of Pharma Collegē,
which simulates patient care through check-ins; reviewing, dosing
and administering medication orders; and patient observation and
education. The game also features pop-up questions and quizzes to
prepare students for nursing licensure exams by enhancing their
understanding of medication administration principles,
incorporating more than 4,000 unique medication orders that
represent over 300 drugs in 150 classifications.
Dr. McKinney has since taken a position as director of Engaged
Learning Technologies at DeVry Education Group, the parent
organization of Chamberlain College of Nursing. “Educational gaming
is proven to heighten student engagement and information retention,
and is considered an important component in the future of higher
education,1” McKinney said. “As part of an active learning
approach, we created Pharma Collegē to allow student nurses to
engage directly with their course material through game-based
simulations. The innovative, web-based application gives students
the opportunity to improve their foundational knowledge of
pharmacology and approach to patient care, preparing them to meet
increasingly more complex healthcare needs.”
The 2015 SIIA CODiE Awards program recognizes leaders in 28
education categories, including three new overall categories: Best
PK-12 Solution, Best Postsecondary Solution and Best Education
Solution. All winners will be announced during an awards dinner May
5 at the Education Industry Summit in San Francisco.
“This year’s finalists are breaking ground with new business
models and innovative products. We are pleased to recognize the
best in educational technology with these 157 products,” said Karen
Billings, vice president of the SIIA Education Technology Industry
Network. “I look forward to honoring them all in May at the
Education Industry Summit.”
