On 10 December 1914, one of the biggest gold deposits of its
time was discovered at Fågelmyran, in the Swedish province of
Västerbotten. The discovery laid the foundations for both the
community and the company known as Boliden, and the 90 years since
then have seen Boliden establish a competitive position in the
fields of exploration, mining, concentration, smelting and
recycling.
“Over the course of these 90 years, we have developed a unique
knowledge base when it comes to exploration, mining, smelting and
leaching processes. This knowledge, together with our position as
industry leaders, entails a special responsibility: Boliden must
endeavour to set a good example when it comes to combining high
returns with high safety levels and low levels of environmental
impact,” says Boliden’s President & CEO, Lennart Evrell.
The anniversary has been celebrated across the Boliden Group
throughout 2014 under a theme – “90 years of knowledge” – that is
intended to emphasise that today’s Boliden has been built by a
combination of growing expertise and technological development.
Since discovering that first deposit at Fågelmyran, Boliden has
operated some 50 mines and the Group today comprises nine mines and
five smelters that focus on the base metals, copper and zinc, and
on lead, gold and silver. Two of the mines – the Aitik copper mine
and the Garpenberg zinc/silver mine – are world leaders in terms of
productivity and the Rnnskär smelter has developed into the
world’s lead player in electronics recycling.
“Base metals such as copper and zinc have a key part to play in
today’s society, not least in countries that are experiencing rapid
growth in prosperity. It happened in Sweden 90 years ago and it is
happening elsewhere in the world today. The metals we produce mean
we are contributing to improvements in global standards of living,
at the same time as we generate value for employees and owners
alike,” says Boliden’s President & CEO, Lennart Evrell.
Boliden is a metals company with a commitment to sustainable
development. Our roots are Nordic, but our business is
global. The company’s core competence is within the fields of
exploration, mining, smelting and metals recycling. Boliden has a
total of approximately 4,800 employees and an annual turnover of
approximately SEK 34 billion. Its share is listed on NASDAQ OMX
Stockholm, segment Large Cap. www.boliden.com
