Bloomberg terminals' chat function suffered an outage Tuesday, forcing finance professionals who rely heavily on the tool to do their jobs to resort to other forms of communication on a high-stakes day for global markets.

The outage was caused by "an internal issue," a person familiar with the situation said.

Bloomberg's data-and-information terminals are used by bond, stock, commodities and foreign-exchange traders to deal, and one of its key components is the electronic-chat system through which many market participants communicate.

In April last year, Bloomberg terminals around the globe suffered an outage leading to major disruptions for traders and caused the U.K. to postpone a scheduled multibillion buyback of government debt.

News Corp's Dow Jones Co., publisher of The Wall Street Journal, competes with Bloomberg on financial news and data.
