Williams Cos. (WMB) on Thursday said the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approved an expansion of the existing Transco natural gas pipeline to serve markets in the northeastern U.S.

The company said they expect to begin construction on the Gateway Expansion Project in the spring of next year, and have targeted an in-service date of Nov. 1, 2020.

"The Gateway project helps meet growing natural gas demand by consumers in New Jersey and New York in time for the 2020/2021 winter heating season, providing additional natural gas service to PSEG Power LLC and UGI Energy Services LLC," the company said.

PSEG, through its affiliate Public Service Electric & Gas Co., serves 2.2 million electric customers and 1.8 million gas customers in New Jersey. UGI supplies and markets natural gas and electricity to 40,000 customers across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern U.S.

Williams owns and operates more than 33,000 miles of pipelines system wide.
