Entergy (ETR +0.7%) says it will permanently shut its 728 MW Pilgrim nuclear reactor in Massachusetts in May 2019, following a final refueling in spring 2017.

ETR had announced earlier that it was considering shutting the unit as early as spring 2017, because the unit is losing ~$40M/year with little chance its economics will improve in the foreseeable future.

The company says the decision to close the plant at the back end of the two-year window was made to fulfill its contractual obligations to supply the region's power grid.

ETR permanently shut the 635 MW Vermont Yankee reactor in 2014, and said in February that it would permanently shut the 849 MW FitzPatrick plant in New York in January 2017.

NEW ORLEANS, March 4, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Taking a major step toward providing additional efficient, clean energy resources for new and existing customers and modernizing the company's power generation fleet, Entergy Corporation (NYSE: ETR) announced that its subsidiaries, Entergy Arkansas, Inc., Entergy Louisiana, LLC, and Entergy New Orleans, Inc., closed their purchase of the 1,980-megawatt (summer rating) Union Power Station located near El Dorado, Arkansas. The purchase was closed on Thursday.


The Union Power Station, which entered commercial service in 2003, is a highly-efficient, natural gas-fired generating facility. The plant consists of four combined-cycle, gas-fired generating units, or CCGTs, each rated at 495 MW.

In December 2014, the company announced an agreement with Union Power Partners, L.P., an independent power producer wholly-owned by Entegra TC LLC, to acquire the units to help meet increasing resource demands in the region and as part of the company's modernization of its generating fleet. The plant purchase price is approximately $948.0 million ($479/kW), or approximately $237.0 million per unit, subject to adjustments. The purchase price is about half the cost to build a comparable new CCGT facility.

Entergy Arkansas and Entergy New Orleans each acquired one unit and Entergy Louisiana acquired two units.

ETR says it will close its Pilgrim nuclear power plant in Plymouth, Mass., by June 2019, citing poor market conditions, reduced revenues and increased operating costs.

ETR says current and forecast power prices have fallen ~$10/MW hour for an annual loss of more than $40M in revenue for the Pilgrim plant, the only nuclear power plant in Massachusetts.

ETR says it expected the plant to incur annual after-tax net losses on an operational basis of $10M-$30M for 2015, 2016 and 2017, before accounting for additional costs related to the decision to close the plant and any potential writedowns.

Entergy (ETR +0.1%) is upgraded to Overweight from from Equal Weight with a $71 price target, down from $73, at Barclays in response to the company's shift in strategic focus to the regulated business, improved regulatory constructs and a potential near-term dividend hike.

The firm says management is de-emphasizing the ongoing contribution of EWC and working toward presenting a clean and improving utility growth story to investors; although ETR has been internally moving in this direction for a while, the firm is increasingly more comfortable the message will begin resonating with the investment community.

Entergy Provides Preliminary First Quarter Earnings Guidance

Entergy Corporation (NYSE: ETR) today indicated that it expects first quarter 2014 as-reported earnings of approximately $2.23 per share and operational earnings of approximately $2.28 per share.

Results for first quarter 2013 were $0.90 per share on an as-reported basis and $0.94 per share on an operational basis.

Strong first quarter 2014 earnings resulted from significantly higher realized wholesale energy prices at Entergy Wholesale Commodities, reflecting cold winter weather and northeast pipeline infrastructure limitations, which reinforces the need for a diverse generation portfolio and the value of existing nuclear generation facilities in the region. The Utility also saw higher earnings on colder-than-normal temperatures. Entergy also raised its 2014 operational earnings guidance to be in the range of $5.55 to $6.75 per share.

As-reported results are prepared in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and are comprised of operational earnings and special items. Special items in first quarter 2014 were recorded arising from the decision to close the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station later this year and the human capital management strategic imperative. First quarter 2013 included a special item for the proposed transmission spin-merge transaction.
The increase in first quarter 2014 earnings was driven by higher results at Entergy Wholesale Commodities and Utility. On a consolidated basis, the preliminary estimate for the effective income tax rate was approximately 35 percent in first quarter 2014.

Entergy Wholesale Commodities

Significantly higher realized wholesale energy prices were the biggest factor driving the quarter-over-quarter increase in operational earnings at Entergy Wholesale Commodities. EWC's hedging strategies routinely include financial instruments that balance operational and liquidity risk through participation in rising power price markets. These positions, in addition to a larger-than-normal unhedged position in 2014 due to Vermont Yankee being in its final operating year, allowed EWC to benefit from the increases in northeast market power prices throughout the quarter. Along with the realization of these positions, revenues also reflected the turnaround of the negative mark-to-market loss recorded in fourth quarter 2013 associated with certain transactions.

A lower effective income tax rate was another factor contributing to higher quarterly earnings. These items were partially offset by higher depreciation expense following the finalization of a new depreciation rate study.

Utility

The increase in Utility first quarter 2014 operational earnings was due primarily to higher net revenue reflecting higher sales volume, primarily weather. The weather effect was approximately $0.18 per share in first quarter 2014, compared to unfavorable weather of negative $(0.10) per share in the comparable period. In addition, non-fuel operation and maintenance expense was lower.

Parent & Other

Parent & Other's operational results were essentially flat versus the first quarter of last year. No individual item was significant.

Earnings Guidance

As a result of higher northeast spot and forward prices and market volatility at EWC and favorable weather at the Utility in the first quarter, Entergy raised its 2014 operational earnings guidance and widened the range to be $5.55 to $6.75 per share. Entergy had previously noted that, based on assumptions as of Dec. 31, 2013, indications were near the upper end of the prior $4.60 to $5.40 per share guidance range.
