Leveling the playing field for children with
disabilities
Speaking at the protocol signing ceremony, Minister Avci said:
“With this cooperation between our Ministry and Turkcell, we are
taking an important step for our children in need of special
education. I hope that this project contributes greatly to the
development of these children and young adults. I thank both
parties for their efforts in turning it into a reality; I am
certain that a highly successful implementation phase lies ahead of
us.”
Mr. Ahmet Akca, the Chairman of the Turkcell Board, underscored
Turkcell’s ongoing commitment to helping disadvantaged segments of
society improve their lives. “At Turkcell, we see this program not
only as a sign of our support for education, but also as a part of
our commitment to creating meaningful employment opportunities. The
budget of the project, 7 million Turkish Liras (roughly 2.6 million
USD) over the course of two years, is proof of how serious we are
in meeting the highest standards. We hope that this project
inspires everyone to do more in improving employment opportunities
for the disabled members of our society.”
Under the two-pronged program:
- Vocational training labs will be
established in 45 schools: Students with disabilities can be
trained to gain competencies that will be helpful in the workplace,
especially in the sectors of accommodation and travel, hospitality
and crafts. With Turkcell’s support, existing training facilities
will be improved, or built from scratch where necessary. Six
thousand students will benefit from these facilities.
- Computer and technology labs will be
established in 35 schools: Efficient use of technology can help
students with disabilities overcome barriers in the workplace. With
Turkcell’s support, schools will be equipped with the technology
infrastructure that will permit students with hearing impairment
receive vocational training in graphic design, information
technology and other similar fields. Devices such as smart boards
and assistive technologies such as text-to-speech programs will be
provided to help visually impaired students catch up with the
curriculum. Four thousand students will benefit from these
