Under the patronage of Turkey’s Ministry of Education, Turkcell (NYSE:TKC) (BIST:TCELL) has launched a new social responsibility project with the goal of helping children with disabilities better integrate into society and the workplace. With its “Enabled through Education” program, Turkcell will provide the infrastructure for vocational and technology classrooms in 80 schools where 10 thousand students receive special education.

The project was launched at a ceremony in Istanbul, during which Mr. Nabi Avci, Minister of Education, and Mr. Ahmet Akca, Chairman of the Turkcell Board, signed the cooperation protocol.

Leveling the playing field for children with disabilities

Speaking at the protocol signing ceremony, Minister Avci said: “With this cooperation between our Ministry and Turkcell, we are taking an important step for our children in need of special education. I hope that this project contributes greatly to the development of these children and young adults. I thank both parties for their efforts in turning it into a reality; I am certain that a highly successful implementation phase lies ahead of us.”

Mr. Ahmet Akca, the Chairman of the Turkcell Board, underscored Turkcell’s ongoing commitment to helping disadvantaged segments of society improve their lives. “At Turkcell, we see this program not only as a sign of our support for education, but also as a part of our commitment to creating meaningful employment opportunities. The budget of the project, 7 million Turkish Liras (roughly 2.6 million USD) over the course of two years, is proof of how serious we are in meeting the highest standards. We hope that this project inspires everyone to do more in improving employment opportunities for the disabled members of our society.”

Under the two-pronged program:

  • Vocational training labs will be established in 45 schools: Students with disabilities can be trained to gain competencies that will be helpful in the workplace, especially in the sectors of accommodation and travel, hospitality and crafts. With Turkcell’s support, existing training facilities will be improved, or built from scratch where necessary. Six thousand students will benefit from these facilities.
  • Computer and technology labs will be established in 35 schools: Efficient use of technology can help students with disabilities overcome barriers in the workplace. With Turkcell’s support, schools will be equipped with the technology infrastructure that will permit students with hearing impairment receive vocational training in graphic design, information technology and other similar fields. Devices such as smart boards and assistive technologies such as text-to-speech programs will be provided to help visually impaired students catch up with the curriculum. Four thousand students will benefit from these facilities.
