Enabling application of appropriate and efficient
deployment
OTTAWA, May 27, 2015 /CNW/ - Raytheon Canada Limited
(RCL), a subsidiary of Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN), has
successfully developed a High Frequency Surface Wave Radar (HFWSR)
system to provide maritime surveillance out to 200 nautical
miles. This system was developed under a contract that was
competitively awarded to RCL as part of the Defence Research and
Development Canada (DRDC) Technology Demonstration Project entitled
Persistent Active Surveillance of the Exclusive Economic Zone
(PASE).
This next- generation High Frequency Surface Wave Radar (HFWSR)
system has completed exhaustive technical evaluations and system
acceptance testing. Next-gen HFSWR has the ability to provide
persistent tracking of a full range of oceangoing vessels
throughout the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), while providing
pro-active intelligent spectrum management to eliminate the
potential of interfering with other users of the HF Spectrum. These
positive results have been presented to the Canadian Armed Forces
and other federal agencies in Ottawa.
The HFSWR system is the culmination of more than 25 years of
work by teams at RCL and DRDC as well as suppliers, including
Northern Radar and academia. Building on the success of previous
versions, the system provides the capability to deliver on the high
demands required for protecting sovereignty and preventing
unwelcome exploitation of natural resources within Canada's EEZ. It
also enables the effective management of developments within the
EEZ that has placed new demands on the organizations of the
Government of Canada, traditionally tasked with coastal
surveillance and enforcement.
"RCL is proud of the opportunity to work with DRDC to develop
this new technology and capability," said Brian Smith, Vice President and General Manager,
RCL. "We look forward to continuing our partnership and its
adoption by Canada."
