Following is the daily "Profile America" feature from the U.S.
Census Bureau:
FAMILY JEWELS
Profile America–Friday, February 24th. A baby boy, whose
name came to mean quality and brilliant design, was born this month
in 1848—Louis Comfort Tiffany. After making his mark
independently, in 1902 he became the artistic director of his
father's already famous jewelry store in New York City. The
younger Tiffany also helped create the art nouveau style
with his famous lamps of floral shapes in iridescent glass.
Years later, the Truman Capote book "Breakfast at Tiffany's" made
the store once more nationally famous. Today across the U.S.,
there are close to 23,000 jewelry stores, employing 125,000 people.
Each year they sell rings, necklaces, bracelets, watches, and other
items of gold, silver and precious stones worth over $28 billion. You can find more facts about
America from the U.S. Census Bureau online at www.census.gov.
