Spirit Airlines Refuses to Spend $4 Million for Big Game Commercial
January 30 2015 - 11:43AM
Any company can make a commercial promoting its products and brand.
It takes a special kind of crazy to spend $4 million just to have
people watch it. Spirit Airlines (Nasdaq:SAVE) is taking the
opposite approach.

"We could easily have produced a slick commercial, with an
A-list celebrity promoting our airline and have it air during this
Sunday's Big Game," said Spirit President and CEO, Ben Baldanza.
"But that would mean those advertising costs would end up getting
bundled into customers' airfare."
Instead, the company produced perhaps the cheapest commercial
ever in a few hours this week. No Hollywood actors, no
pyrotechnics, no elaborate sets and of course no expensive
television buy. A few puppets and some stock footage promote
Spirit's ultra-low fares including a sale with fares from $34.10*
one way.

Spirit Airlines is the first Ultra Low-Cost Carrier in the
Americas and is known for its Bare Fare™, an
unbundled and extremely low fare that gets you to 57 great
locations in the U.S., Latin America, and the Caribbean. Spirit's
fares are the lowest in the U.S. Their a la carte pricing for
additional items gives Spirit's customers Frill
Control™, allowing them to choose the options they want,
and not forcing them to pay for items with an all-inclusive ticket
that other airlines provide. According to the Department of
Transportation Spirit's fares are on average, 40% lower than other
airlines. Even after paying extra for bags, seat assignments and
snacks, Spirit's total price is still 35% less, on average, than
other airlines.
"Any time you see a highly produced airline commercial with
Hollywood stars flying on an aircraft, flying off into the sunset,
you know that airline has spent a lot of money creating it and even
more placing it on TV, and their customers will pay a lot more for
their airfare on that airline as a result," adds Baldanza. "At
Spirit we're focused on keeping our fares low, so we can help
people fly to see friends and family and go to exciting
destinations for less money."
