Hundreds of people were evacuated from London's City Airport late afternoon Friday following a 'chemical incident.'

The airport, which serves as a hub for Canary Wharf and the city's financial center, tweeted from its official Twitter account around 5 p.m. local time that the terminal had been evacuated following an alarm and that the cause was being investigated.

According to a statement on the website of the London Fire Brigade, three fire engines and a range of specialist appliances had been called to the airport on reports of a chemical incident.

The LFB said around 500 members of the public and staff had been evacuated and that there had been reports of a number of passengers feeling unwell. It said that the Metropolitan Police and The London Ambulance Service were also in attendance.
