Takata airbags have already caused several injuries and 8 deaths
due to exploding too powerful at impact. Honda decided to recall
2016 models of its popular CR-V small sport-utility vehicle,
after new risks of inflating Takata airbags have been discovered.
The reason for the recall is a manufacturing flaw in a metal
housing surrounding the driver's airbag inflator.
In case of a crash, "the inflator could rupture, with metal
fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in
serious injury or death," Honda said in documents posted to the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.
Takata has been under NHTSA's investigation for a long time and
Honda's announcement suggests that the tokyo airbag manufacturer
has not fixed all the technical flaws of its products. So far,
nobody, including officials, automakers and Takata itself, managed
to find the root cause for the inflator's rupture.
Takata's preliminary investigation suggests that the problem may
lay in the airbags' manufacturing process. The failure
was discovered during a test at Takata's factory in Monclova, Mexico, and the company notified
NHTSA on Oct. 12.
Honda will communicate with Takata and the NHTSA to find a
solution for this problem. Only 515 CR-V vehicles have been sold
and only 30 have to be recalled. Honda ordered a stop sale on any
other 2016 CR-V vehicle.
