Shelter dogs take over at Navient’s Walk the Employee event, in partnership with Humane Society for Hamilton County
May 19 2016 - 10:52AM
The Humane Society for Hamilton County, a nonprofit, no-kill animal
shelter, yesterday brought along 16 furry companions to local
employer Navient. “Walk the Employee,” as the event is known, aims
to promote employee wellness, while creating awareness about
shelter animals and pet adoption.

Employees were “led” for 20 minutes yesterday by hounds,
beagles, poodle mixes and many other types of breeds around
Navient’s 470,000-square foot facility, located along Interstate 69
in Fishers.
"Since the majority of our animals stay in our shelter for most
of the day, it is so nice to be able to get the dogs out,
socializing with new people, as well as get them in a natural
environment that will allow them to show their true personalities,”
said Maggie Owens, manager of community outreach, Humane Society
for Hamilton County. “This is the second year we have done the
'Walk the Employee' event and I am looking forward to seeing how
many of Navient's employees come back to adopt a new member of
their family. On behalf of the Humane Society for Hamilton
County, I thank the employees of Navient for giving our animals a
great chance of finding their forever home."
Employees who developed a special bond with their canine
companion during yesterday’s walk were able to adopt the dog at a
25 percent discounted rate off the normal adoption fee.
“Navient’s ‘Walk the Employee’ event is a fun, creative way to
raise awareness for shelter dogs and to encourage our employees to
leave their desks and get outside,” said Jon Kroehler, senior vice
president, Navient. “We are proud to help support the Humane
Society for Hamilton County and to help give area dogs a second
chance.”
According to the Humane Society for Hamilton County, the
nonprofit organization received 3,121 stray and unwanted animals in
2015, of which 99 percent were adopted, returned to their owners or
sent to rescue, compared to the national average of 36 percent.
