GUARD SHOT NEAR CANADA PARLIAMENT
Canada's parliament building and other government offices are
locked down in Ottawa after an armed attack left at least one
injured guard at the country's main war memorial.
U.S. STOCKS EDGE HIGHER
U.S. stocks inched higher, with the Dow on pace to extend a
three-day rally that has carried it back into positive territory
for the year. The DJIA was recently up a handful of points.
BOEING POSTS STRONG RESULTS, RAISES OUTLOOK AGAIN
Boeing said its 3Q earnings increased to of $1.36 billion, or
$1.86 a share, buoyed by continued strong demand for the aerospace
giant's jetliners. Revenue climbed to $23.78 billion.
U.S. CONSUMER PRICES UP 0.1%
The consumer-price index rose a seasonally adjusted 0.1% in
September from a month earlier. When excluding volatile food and
energy categories, prices also increased 0.1%. The results matched
economists' forecasts.
DOW CHEMICAL RESULTS TOP EXPECTATIONS
Dow Chemical, which has been selling off assets and streamlining
its operations, said its profit rose to $852 million, or 71c a
share, as sales thrived across the company's segments. Revenue rose
4.9% to $14.41 billion.
U.S. EXPANDS AIR BAG RECALL, URGES IMMEDIATE ACTION
U.S. safety regulators on expanded a recall of defective air
bags from Takata to 7.8 million U.S. vehicles and urged car owners
"to take immediate action."
XEROX REVENUE EDGES DOWN 2.2%
Xerox said its 3Q revenue edged down 2.2% to $5.12 billion as
its document-technology business revenue continued to decline.
Overall, the company reported a profit of $266 million.
GLAXO EARNINGS BEAT EXPECTATIONS
GlaxoSmithKline posted earnings that beat analysts' expectations
and announced a new cost-savings program and management structure,
as pressures in its U.S. business continue to drag down sales and
compound a tough year.
U.S. TO MONITOR WEST AFRICA TRAVELERS FOR EBOLA
U.S. authorities will start monitoring travelers coming into the
country from the three West African countries affected by the Ebola
epidemic for symptoms, the latest measure to contain the spread of
the disease in America.
PACKAGING DYNAMICS PUT ON AUCTION BLOCK
Private-equity firm Kohlberg is said to be looking to sell
Packaging Dynamics in a deal that could value the maker of flexible
packaging at more than $600 million, including debt.
TOTAL NAMES POUYANNÉ CEO
Total's board named refining and chemicals head Patrick Pouyanné
as its new CEO, installing a company veteran. Move follows the
death of Chairman and CEO Christophe de Margerie in a Moscow plane
crash Monday.
