Digital Farmers Will Take Back the Internet: https://medium.com/@livontheblock/digital-farmers-will-take-back-the-internet-19726f6e96f8 A new form of farming has arrived, and it’s going to take back the internet! Wait, what? Yes, you read that right. Farming is going to take the internet as we know it to the next level — out of the hands of big data monopolies and back into the hands of we the people. ThreeFold, a digital organization working in the cloud and blockchain space, has developed advanced open source software to power mini distributed data centers (at home or anywhere there is electricity and internet connection), thus allowing you and I to become digital farmers, to collectively create an autonomous, secure, global decentralized network of storage and computing capacity. Hooray! Huh? So what exactly does that mean? Well, if you don’t know much about the internet and how it works, that’s ok. Just do a quick search on how much energy (and physical space) it takes to keep the internet + all our selfies, cat videos and #foodporn and other important data alive. While you’re at it, ask Siri or Alexa (if you are on speaking terms with either) how much it costs to build just one of the many mega (hyperscale) data centers required to keep up with the Kardashians and the whole internet of things running quickly and smoothly, just the way we like (expect) it. You will soon find through your research that it is currently impossible and unsustainable to build the infrastructure needed to keep it all together. Enter ThreeFold digital farming. A secure, energy efficient and sustainable solution to the internet (cloud) dilemma. You may have heard of miners, they use their computing hardware to ‘mine’ Bitcoins by solving increasingly complicated algorithms on the blockchain — this requires A LOT of energy! Ugh. ThreeFold Farming also uses hardware but in a different way thanks to open source self managing-self healing software. By connecting nodes (computing hardware) to the ThreeFold Grid, farmers are rewarded with monthly TFTs (ThreeFold Tokens — the exclusive medium of exchange on the ThreeFold Grid). TFTs are only ever created when new hardware is connected to the ThreeFold Grid, meaning their value is backed by the fastest growing commodity of our time, the internet. ThreeFold Farmers will soon be able to list and sell their storage and compute capacity from their connected hardware, to customers like app developers, engineers, programmers and anyone who may need large amounts of decentralized internet capacity and storage. This vastly lowers costs and energy consumption while spreading the internet to the ‘edge’ (closer to us, the end users). This means information remains local, private and doesn’t have to travel long distances or be stored in vulnerable, energy hungry, centralized data centers anymore. Win! Digital farming will take back the internet by distributing and decentralizing IT capacity on a global scale, and YOU can be a part of the internet revolution. If you’re interested to learn more about ThreeFold, ThreeFold Tokens, the technology behind it all, how farming works, or to connect with the growing community, visit threefold.io. Show more

According to Threefold the Commercial value of a ThreeFold Token (TFT) Commercial value of 1 TFT = commercial_value_of_grid (over 5 years) / nr_of_liquid_tokens (available today) At time of writing this is about USD $0.35 How do we measure the commercial value? each node is being registered in the TF Directory the total resources available are measured by Zero-OS the resources are measured by means of [resource_units] The following formula's are used to calculate from resource units to [cloud_units]. 1 CU = min(MRU/4*(1-5%),CRU*2) 1 SU = HRU / 1093 + SRU / 137 1 NU = CU x 10 + SU x 2% x 1000 each cloudunit has a commercial value at time of writing (jan 2019) we use USD 15$ for a compute unit USD 12$ for a storage unit reasoning We use as basis the definitions in [cloud_units]. compute unit = CU 1 std CU is 4GB of mem and we take 5% buffer but we can never oversubscribe more than 4 times. 1 std CU has 2 virtual CPUs thanks to min CRUx2 we make sure that oversubcription is max of 4. We need to take min because the most conservative measurement needs to be used. storage unit = SU From experience we know the required resources that allow us to deliver the specs as defined in the definitions. It's the combination of SSD & HD capacity. The detailed calculations are described below. HARD DISK CAPACITY = (archivecapacity x 70% + nascapacity x 30%) / redundancy_factor = (1000 x 70% + 400 x 30%) / 0.75 = 1093 0.75 is the redundancy factor, which means we take 25% overhead for redundancy we take 70% of archive capacity in the field we take 30% of nas capacity in the field SSD capacity = (( SSD_disk x 75% + DB_disk x 5%) / redundancy_factor + temp_disk x 20%) x free_space_facttor = (( 50 x 75% + 5 x 5%) / 0.5 + 80 x 20%) x 1.5 = 137 For SSD we take 75% for std purposes, 5% is for database & 20% for temp space. The temp space is not redundant so there is no redundancy factor. It's on SSD so the redundancy factor is 2x, we copy each block 2x. We take a free space factor of 1.5 which means 33% of capacity is free on the SSD and will not be used by customers. Network Unit This is the most tricky one because we don't know the relation between network bandwidth requirements and storage or compute workloads. The NU's are a result of the available CUs and SUs. We did best effort estimates in this phase, this will improve as we get more data. compute_units x 20 + storage_units x 2% x 1000 estimation We estimate that averaged out each compute unit will require 20 GB of transfered data per month (which is conservative). We estimate that averaged out each storage unit will require 2% of its capacity transfered per month Show more

HPE provides their clients in the CEEMA region with the option to connect their computing and storage capacity to ThreeFold’s decentralized grid that supports ThreeFold’s mission to provide a Responsible Internet, accessible to all. HPE server and storage hardware has been certified to be used on ThreeFold’s Grid and HPE plans to build services to support the growth and usage of ThreeFold’s Grid which is in line with their edge cloud and blockchain strategy. ThreeFold launched a Responsible Internet capacity platform (on March 2018) with the support and collaboration from its community, and has already achieved sizable deployments of decentralized internet compute and storage capacity across the globe. ThreeFold’s open source and localized IT capacity encourage developers; as a result of cost and performance efficiencies, to build all types of decentralized applications on its network to promote the expansion of a new digital responsible economy. “This is a monumental step towards a new responsible internet and empowering a new digital economy“, Kristof De Spiegeleer, Visionary Co-Founder of ThreeFold. “ThreeFold has created one of the smartest Blockchain solutions we have come across”, said Johannes Koch: Vice President and HPE CEEMA Managing Director. “We are excited about our future cooperation”.
