EHNINGEN, Germany,
Dec. 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) today
announced that the German startup Preveniomed has chosen IBM Cloud
to securely store and process patient data and health records on
pilots from around the world.
Aviation medicine is an especially sensitive area of
occupational medicine because the safety of passengers depends
directly on the health of pilots, aircrews and security personnel.
To ensure safety, pilots applying for a license are required by
government regulations to take and pass a health exam before they
can fly an airplane, helicopter or airship. As part of the checkup,
sensitive data is collected, stored and closely tracked by the
doctors to ensure that pilots are in optimal health, regardless of
whether it is for professional or amateur flight.
Preveniomed offers services and advice for aviation medicine and
has doctors on staff who examine patients for fitness to fly. The
startup recently decided to store its patient's encrypted data and
launch its mission critical patient-data monitoring applications on
cloud infrastructure from SoftLayer, an IBM company to take
advantage of the security and always-on availability. By
integrating its patent data with web-based applications hosted on
the IBM Cloud, doctors at Preveniomed are able to reliably access
it from anywhere knowing that it is secure.
Preveniomed worked with IBM business partner eperi to migrate to
the IBM Cloud. eperi, which offers a Gateway for Databases
application that is available in the IBM Cloud marketplace –
encrypted all of Preveniomed's patients' data to comply with all of
the requirements of the German Medical Council (BAK) and the
National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians
(KBV).
"We opted for IBM and eperi as our IT partners because it allows
us to protect our patients' data from outages with cloud
infrastructure that is always available and accessible from
anywhere," said Dr. Andreas
Adrian, physician and founder of Preveniomed. "Being in the
very sensitive healthcare business, one of the compelling reasons
for the SoftLayer solution was the data protection we achieved by
using the eperi encryption technology."
By deploying its IT environment on the IBM Cloud, Preveniomed is
able to concentrate on its core tasks in aviation medicine and
consulting while IBM manages its IT infrastructure, enabling it to
seamlessly protect data and scale with confidence. The global reach
of SoftLayer's cloud platform is also important for Preveniomed as
the company plans to expand to offer services across
Europe and the US.
"SoftLayer's cloud infrastructure is secure, reliable and can
easily be deployed to accommodate any workload – all key features
for a growing startup like Preveniomed that deals with highly
sensitive data like patent records," said Rainer Strohm, Direktor Cloud Services SoftLayer
Germany, Austria and Switzerland with IBM. "Leveraging SoftLayer's
cloud infrastructure will help Preveniomed grow faster and with
greater efficiency to enable the company to treat more patients
around the world."
