DALLAS, May 4, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Securus Technologies, a leading provider of civil and criminal justice technology solutions for public safety, investigation, corrections and monitoring, announced today that it has filed a lawsuit against GTL in the District Court in Dallas County, Texas for tortious interference, defamation and business disparagement.

Securus Technologies Inc.

The lawsuit alleges that GTL falsely implied to Securus' customers that Securus' ability to provide specialized call-processing and billing equipment and services to correctional facilities throughout the United States was compromised as a result of ongoing and unresolved patent litigation.

"GTL should know better than to claim victory and attempt to scare our customers – we had some firefighting to do in order to ease their concerns," said Richard A. ("Rick") Smith, Chief Executive Officer of Securus Technologies. "The facts are that the court process will likely take years to get to a conclusion. We have examined GTL's patents in detail with internal and external technology experts and we do not infringe. We have approximately 2.5 times as many patents as GTL – so we believe that it is more likely that they infringe on our patents than we infringe on theirs."

"I believe GTL is a relative 'patent novice.' They have no license agreements with competitors and they have never collected license fees from anyone versus Securus where we have negotiated 19 license agreements – two with GTL directly – and we have collected $60 million in license agreements AND our patent portfolio is the largest by far in our sector," said Smith.

"GTL needs to play fair here – and if they don't, we will continue to use the legal system to get them to do so. In my opinion, it always seems to be a challenge for GTL to abide by the rules, unlike what most of our other competitors do," concluded Smith.
