AAFA Reports Many Americans are Missing Key
Cleaning Steps to Help Remove Common Allergens in Their Home;
Swiffer and Febreze Announce Select Products Now Certified asthma
& allergy friendly™
According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America
(AAFA), when it comes to spring cleaning, many Americans may
actually be doing it wrong, stirring up the very allergens they are
trying to remove from their homes. This spring cleaning season,
Febreze® and Swiffer® are proud to announce that Febreze® Fabric
Refresher Allergen Reducer, Unscented and Swiffer® Dry Dusters and
Sweepers, Unscented are now Certified asthma & allergy
friendly™. Certified asthma & allergy friendly™ products from
Swiffer can take care of hard surfaces while Febreze Allergen
Reducer Unsented handles soft surfaces.

To help shed light on the subject, self-proclaimed cleaning
fanatic and star of “Modern Family,” Jesse Tyler Ferguson, will
join the brands in a spring-tervention to help people clean more
effectively when it comes to the reduction of inanimate allergens
in their home.
“Anyone who knows me well knows that I'm a bit of a
micro-manager when it comes to housekeeping. I don't like piles, I
don't like clutter and I don't like dust. People may say I'm a
neat freak, but I wear it as a badge of honor; I’m happiest
when things are in order. I’m obsessed with cleaning my home
and my trailer on the set of Modern Family, so when I learned
from the folks at AAFA that I was cleaning wrong and actually
stirring up the allergens instead of removing them, I stopped to
listen,” said Ferguson. “Now, there are select asthma
& allergy friendly™ products from Febreze and Swiffer that help
reduce allergens in the home, which is especially important to me
when the seasons change. The most eye-opening thing to me was that
I was forgetting my windows and couches in my cleaning regimen,
where tons of allergens collect. It’s my own personal
spring-tervention, people!”
According to AAFA, there are places in the home that inanimate
allergens like pollen, pet dander and dust mite matter tend to
gather. In many cases, when not cleaned the right way and with the
most effective tools, these allergens could actually be blown back
into the air instead of being removed. Places that are often
overlooked are tops of moldings, window sills, drapery
rods/hardware, under books and in door jambs. By using a Certified
Swiffer Duster, Unscented on all your hard surfaces and hard to
reach locations, you are able to trap and lock inanimate allergens,
preventing them from recirculating as they would with a traditional
dry dusting cloth. Additionally, spring cleaners are encouraged not
to forget that soft surfaces like couch pillows, drapery and
stuffed toys can harbor allergens that, when windows are opened or
couches are sat on, release allergens back into the air. A simple
spritz of Certified Febreze Allergen Reducer Fabric Refresher,
Unscented and a vacuum can ensure that inanimate allergens are
being trapped and removed, preventing them from recirculating in
the room or depositing on clothes.
Certified asthma & allergy friendly™ Swiffer and Febreze
products are the first to be certified in their respective
categories of dry dusting cleaners and allergen reducing sprays.
They include:
- Swiffer Dry Sweeper, Unscented:
Dry cloths trap and lock dust and up to 70% of inanimate allergens
from pet dander and dust mite matter, which is two times more than
a typical dusting cloth.
- Swiffer Duster and Duster 360°,
Unscented: Thousands of flexible, fluffy fibers trap and lock
dust and up to 70% of inanimate allergens from pollen, pet dander
and dust mite matter. This is two times more than a typical dusting
cloth and three times more than a feather duster.
- Febreze Fabric Refresher Allergen
Reducer, Unscented: Provides powerful results without the
scent, eliminating odors and reducing up to 95% of inanimate
allergens from pollen, dust mite matter and cat and dog dander that
become airborne from soft surfaces.
“With all of the misconceptions about how to properly reduce
inanimate allergens in the home, we are proud to certify these
three Swiffer and Febreze products as asthma & allergy
friendly™,” said Mike Tringale, Senior Vice President of External
Affairs at AAFA. “Using the right tools, cleaning the proper way
and staying on top of daily allergen removal can really help to
make a healthier home.”
To help spread the word, Ferguson encouraged spring cleaners
nationwide to share their own spring cleaning hacks with hash tags
