China reminds Trump that supercomputing is a race

China to produce exascale prototype by year end

Patrick Thibodeau By Patrick Thibodeau | Follow
Senior Editor, Computerworld | JAN 19, 2017 1:41 PM PT

China intends to develop a prototype of an exascale supercomputer by the end of 2017, tweaking an exascale delivery date that's already well ahead of the U.S. The timing of the announcement, reported by an official government news service, raised the possibility it was a message to President-elect Donald Trump.

China's announcement comes the same week Trump takes office. The Trump administration is bringing a lot of uncertainty to supercomputing research, which is heavily dependent on government funding.

[ Further reading: The march toward exascale computers ]
"The exascale race is also a publicity and mindshare race," said Steve Conway, a high-performance computing analyst at IDC. "The Chinese are putting a stake in the ground and saying we're going to have a prototype computer soon, maybe a year or so sooner than people expected," he said.

The Hill reported Thursday that the Trump administration is planning deep cuts at the U.S. Department of Energy, which funds the development of the America's largest supercomputers.

This report, which didn't name sources, said the Trump administration was considering cutting advanced scientific computing research to 2008 levels, a position advocated by conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation.

China's exascale prototype update, a system previously expected in 2018, arrived at the same time a U.S. Senate committee held a confirmation hearing of Rick Perry, the former Texas governor and Trump's nominee for Secretary of Energy.

Perry once called for the elimination of the department, but at today's confirmation hearing he said he regretted that earlier statement.

"I am a major proponent of maintaining American leadership in the area of scientific inquiry," said Perry, in prepared remarks to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. "I support the academic and government mission of basic research, even when it will not yield benefits for a generation."

[To comment on this story, visit Reddit, where discussion has been lively.]
China is building a supercomputing program not only to advance its scientific research capabilities, but to help it develop an IT industry independent of U.S. technology. Its TaihuLight system was built entirely with Chinese-produced microprocessors.

"A complete computing system of the exascale supercomputer and its applications can only be expected in 2020, and will be 200 times more powerful than the country's first petaflop computer Tianhe-1, recognized as the world's fastest in 2010," said Zhang Ting, application engineer with the Tianjin-based National Supercomputer Center, according to the report in the China Daily.

China had previously set 2020 as its delivery date for an exascale system, so the prototype plan does not change the broader deadline.

TaihuLight, can reach a peak of just over 125 petaflops. A petaflop system can perform one quadrillion arithmetic operations per second. An exascale system is 1,000 petaflops.

"It's not exactly clear what an exascale supercomputer prototype means," said IDC's Conway. The size of it is unknown, but he expects it will be a system with the same architecture of an exascale system, but a smaller version of it.

The U.S. has set a 2023 timeframe for development of an exascale system that is fully capable of running applications. The U.S. plans to order the systems in 2019, but the Trump administration may have different goals. Japan, Europe and maybe even Russia are in the race to build exascale systems.

The Department of Energy develops and safeguards the nation's nuclear weapons. It uses supercomputers to conduct simulations of nuclear weapons. But these systems are also used heavily for basic research by academic and industry researchers throughout the U.S.

Los Alamos unleashes HPC for unclassified research

Los Alamos National Laboratory recently announced it had installed a new high-performance computer system, called Wolf, which will be used for unclassified research.

Wolf, manufactured by Cray Inc., has 616 compute nodes – each with two 8-core 2.6 GHz Intel Sandybridge processors, 64 GB of memory and a high speed Infiniband interconnect network. It uses the Lab’s existing Panasas parallel file system as well as a new one based on Lustre technology and will run at 197 teraflops per second.

“This machine modernizes our mid-tier resources available to Laboratory scientists,” said Bob Tomlinson, of the Laboratory’s High Performance Computing group. “Wolf is a critical tool that can be used to advance many fields of science.”

Initial science research projects to use Wolf include climate, materials and astrophysics modeling.

The Lab’s Institutional Computing program provides production-computing resources for open and collaborative science at the laboratory through a competitive, peer-reviewed proposal process. Los Alamos scientists use these systems for fundamental as well as applied research in a wide variety of technical fields.

Cray Joins EU’s Push Toward Exascale Technologies

June 19, 2014 by Dominik Ulmer Leave a Comment

Cray acquired the assets of Gnodal in Bristol, U.K. November of last year. From its start with sales and customer-support organizations in Europe, Cray has made significant additions to its R&D staff, its CTO office and other local teams. Acquiring Gnodal demonstrated Cray’s desire to grow this European R&D team, to collaborate and exchange information with other leaders in the European HPC environment as well as continue our push towards exascale technologies. This collaboration is exemplified by Cray’s recent membership in the European Technology Platform for High-Performance Computing (ETP4HPC).
European Technology Platforms are industry-led forums that collaborate with the European Commission (EC) in Brussels. As stated in the ETP4HPC website, the platforms provide “a framework for stakeholders to define research priorities and action plans on a number of technological areas.” ETP4HPC’s stated mission includes helping stimulate Europe’s economy by encouraging widespread use of HPC in both industry and academia. Today, the organization has 56 members, mainly from industry, ranging from small high-tech companies to large international corporations. Its current focus is developing a strategic research agenda for supercomputing in Europe, “while acting as the ‘one voice’ of the European HPC industry in relations with the European Commission and national authorities.”
The EC just started its new funding framework program for research and innovation, called “Horizon 2020.” The program runs from 2014 to 2020 with a total budget of €70.2 billion. The EC has an exciting portfolio of R&D actions, including for example, flagship projects like the Human Brain Project (HBP), a 10-year program with a budget of €1 billion that aims to simulate the human brain with supercomputers. The HBP encompasses some of the main European HPC centers, including Cray sites like ETH Zurich/CSCS and the University of Edinburgh/EPCC. Simulating the human brain will require completely different supercomputer architectures than are currently on the market. The HBP recently issued a precommercial procurement call for developing blueprints of future computer architectures for large-scale neuroscientific simulations.
By joining ETP4HPC, Cray reinforces its collaboration with leading academic and industrial partners in Europe, and leverages its work with European customers whose requirements lean toward extreme scale computing. Cray will share its views on the future of HPC in Europe, taking into account its own experiences in other regions of the globe. Being accepted as member of the organization enables Cray to be a part of ETP4HPC’s EU development of exascale technologies and enables Cray to continue to grow in Europe.

4:05 PM ET 2/14/13 | Marketwire

Global supercomputer leader Cray Inc. (NASDAQ: CRAY) today announced financial results for the year and fourth quarter ended December 31, 2012. For 2012, Cray reported total revenue of $421.1 million, which compares with $236.0 million for 2011. Net income for 2012 was $161.2 million, or $4.27 per share, compared to $14.3 million, or $0.40 per share, for 2011. Income from operations for 2012 was $168.1 million compared to $1.2 million for 2011.

All figures in this release are based on U.S. GAAP unless otherwise noted. A reconciliation of GAAP to non-GAAP measures is included in the financial tables in this press release.

Non-GAAP net income, which adjusts for selected unusual and non-cash items (including the $139.1 million pre-tax gain from the Intel transaction), was $33.3 million, or $0.88 per share, for 2012, compared to non-GAAP net income of $4.7 million, or $0.13 per share, for 2011.

For the fourth quarter of 2012, revenue was $188.8 million compared to $91.6 million in the prior year period. The Company reported net income for the fourth quarter of $14.0 million, or $0.36 per share, compared to $31.0 million, or $0.85 per share, in the fourth quarter of 2011. Non-GAAP net income was $17.2 million, or $0.44 per share, for the fourth quarter of 2012, compared to non-GAAP net income of $17.1 million, or $0.47 per share for the same period last year.

Overall gross profit margin for 2012 was 36 percent compared to 40 percent in 2011. Product margin for 2012 was 35 percent, consistent with 2011 results; service margin for 2012 was 43 percent compared to 49 percent for 2011.

Operating expenses for 2012 were $122.2 million compared to $93.2 million in 2011. Compared to 2011, 2012 operating expenses were impacted by higher incentive based compensation, increased investments in our storage and big data initiatives, fewer R&D co-funding credits and additional expenses which resulted from our acquisition of Appro International.

As of December 31, 2012, cash and investments totaled $323 million.

"We had a great year across the board in 2012, highlighted by the completion of the largest supercomputer and storage system in our company's history," said Peter Ungaro, president and CEO of Cray. "We grew substantially in 2012, posting record revenue and operating profit for the year, and have put ourselves on a path to continue to grow faster than our overall market. With our new cluster solutions and XC30 supercomputer, we've expanded our offerings in the supercomputing market, while our storage and Big Data products continue to gain momentum with new customers. I'm excited about our prospects for 2013 and what we're building for the future."

Outlook

While a wide range of results remains possible for 2013, we expect revenue to be approximately $500 million for the year. Revenue is expected to ramp quarterly during 2013 with roughly $70 million in the first quarter and about 45% of the annual revenue expected in the fourth quarter. For 2013, overall gross margins are anticipated to be in the mid-30% range. Total operating expenses for 2013 are expected to be in the range of $160 million, which includes approximately $8 million in stock-based compensation and amortization of purchased intangibles. Based on this outlook, we expect to be profitable for 2013.

The Company's 2013 effective income tax rate is currently projected to be about 40% but is dependent on a number of variables. Based on this outlook, due to the Company's substantial net operating loss carryforwards, annual income tax provision is expected to be largely non-cash and our effective cash-tax rate is expected to be 8-10%.

Actual results for any future period are subject to large fluctuations given the nature of Cray's business.

Use of Non-GAAP Financial Measures This press release contains "non-GAAP financial measures" under the rules of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. A reconciliation of GAAP to non-GAAP results is included in the financial tables included in this press release. Management believes that the non-GAAP financial measures provide additional insight for analysts and investors in evaluating Cray's financial and operational performance in the same way that the management evaluates the company's financial performance. However, these non-GAAP financial measures have limitations as an analytical tool, as they exclude the financial impact of transactions necessary or advisable for the conduct of Cray's business, such as the granting of equity compensation awards, and are not intended to be an alternative to financial measures prepared in accordance with GAAP. Hence, to compensate for these limitations, management does not review these non-GAAP financial metrics in isolation from its GAAP results, nor should investors.

Non-GAAP financial measures are not based on a comprehensive set of accounting rules or principles. This non-GAAP information supplements, and is not intended to represent a measure of performance in accordance with, or disclosures, required by generally accepted accounting principles, or GAAP. These measures are adjusted as described in the reconciliation of GAAP to non-GAAP numbers at the end of this release, but these adjustments should not be construed as an inference that all of these adjustments or costs are unusual, infrequent or non-recurring. Non-GAAP financial measures should be considered in addition to, not as a substitute for or superior to, financial measures determined in accordance with GAAP. Investors are advised to carefully review and consider this non-GAAP information as well as the GAAP financial results that are disclosed in Cray's SEC filings.

Adaptive Computing to Work with Cray to Manage Computing Workloads for the North-German Supercomputing Alliance (HLRN)

8:15 AM ET 1/15/13 | BusinessWire

--Moab, Adaptive Computing's Patented Workload Management Technology, Optimizes HPC Environments

Adaptive Computing, the largest provider of High-Performance Computing (HPC) workload management and private cloud management software, today announced that it will work with Cray Inc. to manage computing workloads for the North-German Supercomputing Alliance (HLRN). Using its Moab HPC Suite, Adaptive Computing is managing HLRN's computing workload on a distributed Cray XC30 supercomputing system of more than 6,500 network sockets, with nearly 1,000 more sockets expected to be added.

"We have been a long-time customer of Adaptive Computing because they allow us to fully meet our research objectives," said Wolfgang W. Baumann, support coordinator of HLRN. A Supercomputer to the Rescue in the Gulf of Mexico (CRAY)
A Significant Partnership Gets Underway Relying on Processing Mass Amounts of Data…

By Dennis Askew
Sep 12, 2012 11:12:01 AM PDT

I’ve written positively on Cray Inc. (NASDAQ:CRAY) in the past; seeing the Company’s supercomputers in use at the CIA which I saw on network television. I like the way the Company jumped on “Cloud Computing” early on and garnered a large and continuing market share.

Two weeks ago CRAY entered a deal with the Consortium for Advanced Research on Transport of Hydrocarbon in the Environment (CARTHE), in collaboration with the University of Miami Center for Computational Science (CCS).

CARTHE will acquire a Cray XE6m supercomputer as part of the organization's goal to develop and improve computational tools to accurately predict the fate of hydrocarbons released into the environment during normal and hurricane weather conditions.

"This supercomputer is more important than ever to our project in light of Hurricane Isaac cutting directly through our on-going experiment in the Gulf of Mexico. Data collected during the hurricane may help shed light on how pollutants behave should an oil spill occur before or during a major weather event like Hurricane Isaac," said Tamay Özgökmen, CARTHE director.

The Cray XE6m supercomputer, which will be located at the University of Miami's Rosentiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science (RSMAS for a CARTHE program that is studying the surface ocean currents that transport pollutants in real time.

Gasoline that serves as fuel for automobiles consists primarily of hydrocarbons and though the majority of hydrocarbons are found naturally in decomposed organic matter, industry and crude oil production produces hydrocarbons which can be harmful if inhaled. Hydrocarbons contribute to the formation of ozone in the atmosphere and are considered to be pollutants.

In the middle of last month I also saw this on network television in a report about how a server farm loaded with Cray’s supercomputers can digest and disseminate a near uncalcuable amount of data.

The report came on the heals on CRAY announcing its next-generation supercomputer code-named "Cascade" will be available with NVIDIA Tesla GPUs and the new Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors.

"Cascade will be the first system to combine three key technologies: the latest Intel Xeon CPUs, Cray's next-generation Aries system interconnect, and new Tesla Kepler-based GPUs, the highest performance, most energy-efficient accelerators ever built," said Sumit Gupta, senior director of the Tesla business unit at NVIDIA. "This combination enables applications to scale to tens of thousands of CPU-GPU nodes to solve the world's most complex scientific computing problems."

A good summer for Cray…

In July, Cray announced it had signed a contract with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) to provide the Pawsey Centre in Perth, Australia with a Cascade supercomputer and a next-generation Cray Sonexion storage system as part of a $21 million agreement.

Cray announced in June that it will install a Cascade supercomputer and a next-generation Cray Sonexion storage system at the Department of Energy's National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) in Berkeley, California as part of a $40 million supercomputing agreement.

Bouncing back from a dip shares of CRAY are trading in the $11.91 range today; $1.02 off its 52-week high. There’s been a little normal profit-taking today of the top of the run-up.

I haven’t, don’t, and do not intend on holding any of the companies mentioned in this article.

Cray Surging in Traditional Pattern (CRAY, IBM, HPQ)
Cray up 78.52% for 2012 with Big Contract Booked

By Jonathan Yates
Sep 5, 2012 6:15:27 AM PDT |

Cray Computers (NASDAQ: CRAY) historically performs best towards the end of the calendar year. Selling its advanced computers to universities, governments and other institutional investors, much of the revenue is booked in the third and fourth quarters. This happens in the high tech sector for companies such as IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Hewlett Packard (NYSE: HPQ), too.

A Cray XE6m Supercomputer was just sold to the Consortium for Advanced Research on Transport of Hydrocarbon in the Environment (CARTHE). The Cray XE6M is being acquired to help CARTHE to develop and improve computational tools to better determine the patterns of hyrdocarbons upon release into the atmosphere. This will be done for both normal and adverse weather conditions, such as hurricanes.

This has been a strong year for Cray, already. Year to date, Cray is up 78.52%. The stock price has more than doubled in the last year of market activity.

Both the balance sheet and income statement point towards this continuing. The capital structure of Cray is very sound: there is no debt and plenty of cash. The stock price-to-cash ratio is 2.02.

Sales and earnings are soaring. On a quarterly basis, sales growth is higher for Cray Inc by 23.94%. Due to several huge deals, earnings-per-share growth for Cray is up this quarter by 4734.29%.

The price-to-earnings ratio for Cray Inc is just 2.54. Its price-to-earnings growth ratio is only 0.13. According to legendary investor Peter Lynch, the PEG is one of the most important indicators. A PEG of 1 is considered to be adequate: the lower the better. IBM has a PEG of 1.33.

Now trading for around $11.50 a share, the mean analyst target price for Cray Inc over the next year of market action is $14.50. With a profit margin of over 50% and a return-on-equity of 73%, Cray Inc should continue rising to that level, particularly with its strongest quarters ahead.

Cray XE6 to Assist in Hydrocarbon Research

SEATTLE, WA, Aug. 31 --

Global supercomputer leader Cray Inc. today announced that the Consortium for Advanced Research on Transport of Hydrocarbon in the Environment (CARTHE), in collaboration with the University of Miami Center for Computational Science (CCS), will acquire a Cray XE6m supercomputer as part of the organization's goal to develop and improve computational tools to accurately predict the fate of hydrocarbons released into the environment during normal and hurricane weather conditions.

"This supercomputer is more important than ever to our project in light of Hurricane Isaac cutting directly through our on-going experiment in the Gulf of Mexico. Data collected during the hurricane may help shed light on how pollutants behave should an oil spill occur before or during a major weather event like Hurricane Isaac," said Tamay Oezgoekmen, CARTHE director.

An animated movie of Hurricane Isaac going through the experiment can be seen at http://laplace.ceoe.udel.edu/GLAD/DRIFTERS/GLAD_movie.gif .

Oezgoekmen added, "We have some challenging goals ahead of us as we produce comprehensive modeling hierarchy that provides a four dimensional description of oil/dispersant fate and transport in the Gulf of Mexico and coastal environments across all relevant time and space scales, and in multiple weather conditions. High performance computing is a critical element of our research, and we needed a system that has the performance, usability and demonstrated capabilities that will allow us to start our work now. The Cray XE6m is a great fit for us."

CARTHE is funded by the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI), which is a 10-year, $500 million independent research program that was established to study the effects of the Deepwater Horizon incident. GoMRI investigates the impacts of oil, dispersed oil, and dispersant on the ecosystems of the Gulf of Mexico and affected coastal States in a broad context of improving fundamental understanding of the dynamics of such events and their environmental stresses and public health implications.

The Cray XE6m supercomputer, which will be located at the University of Miami's Rosentiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science (RSMAS), will be an important computational resource for a CARTHE program that is studying the surface ocean currents that transport pollutants in real time.

"The Cray XE6m is quite unique and much like a very tightly knit computational ecosystem," said Nick Tsinoremas, CCS director. "It is likely the very best solution for problems of this type today."

CCS staff oversaw real-time data management from the information collected from 300 drifting buoys this summer that occurred in five-minute intervals, and they will continue to provide logistical support to scientists as the data are analyzed throughout the project.

"The Cray supercomputer not only provides impressive computing power, but it represents an entirely new form of computing for many principal investigators whose problems fit into the same sort of paradigm as the CARTHE project," said Joel Zysman, CCS director of high-performance computing. "With the system scheduled to be up and running in approximately nine weeks, we have a wonderful new tool for these researchers."

"The scientists participating in the CARTHE program are performing some vitally important research, and we are honored that a Cray supercomputer will provide the high performance computing resources that are necessary for their studies," said Per Nyberg, Cray's director of business development. "Many of the world's leading weather, climate and oceanography centers run their simulations on Cray supercomputers, and we are pleased that CARTHE has joined our growing list of customers in this segment."

The Cray XE6m system includes the same petascale technologies found in high-end Cray supercomputers, such as Cray's Gemini interconnect, the Cray Linux Environment and powerful AMD Opteron processors. The system is designed to maintain an attractive cost of ownership and extend Cray's presence in market segments that have needs for technical enterprise supercomputing systems, such as the university, manufacturing, weather and life sciences communities. Fully upgradeable from previous generations of Cray supercomputers, the Cray XE6m system is also designed to give customers the ability to upgrade to future Cray systems and technologies.

About CARTHE

CARTHE comprises 26 principal investigators from 12 universities and research institutions distributed across four Gulf of Mexico states and four other states. It fuses into one group of investigators with scientific and technical knowledge and publications related to oil fate/transport processes, oceanic and atmospheric turbulence, air-sea interactions, tropical cyclones and winter storms, and coastal and nearshore modeling and observations. Visit www.carthe.org for more information.

CRAY: Cray Takes Supercomputing to Mass markets
By Brian Prescott
Aug 13, 2012 10:53:49 AM PDT

There is something about specialty players operating in an oligopolistic market. Cray Inc (NASDAQ: CRAY) is an apt example of such a player. The company designs, develops, and produces high-performance computing systems and provides engineering services related to such systems. There are only a handful of players in this space and probably this explains the 78 per cent jump registered in the stock so far this year.

Incidentally, Cray is a featured stock on Small Cap Network but there is a better rationale for making it a featured stock than just the price appreciation in the past. The strength and robustness of the company’s underlying technology places it ahead of competition which also includes likes of IBM. Cray’s flagship product, the Cascade supercomputer system, finds its roots in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) High Productivity Computing Systems (HPCS) program.

The Cascade system is based on next-generation Intel Xeon processors but supports a multiple processor lineup of Intel and AMD x86 processors and emerging accelerator alternatives. Meanwhile, the company continues to win more contracts. It was recently awarded a $21 million contract from Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation for installing the Cascade supercomputer and a next-generation storage system. Another $40 million contract has been awarded by the Department of Energy for its National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC). It will likely keep adding more to the list as supercomputers’ target market broaden from academics and research institutes to more real world applications. The NERSC, for example, plans to make use of the supercomputer in various walks of everyday life including materials science, chemistry, geosciences, fusion energy, astrophysics, nuclear and high-energy physics.

Looking at all this, it is no surprise that analysts at Needham have a ‘Buy’ rating on the stock with a target price of $14, representing a potential upside of 24 per cent from the current market price of $11.3. Limited competition in this capital intensive business means profit margins are excellent. The company is virtually debt free and trades at a forward price earnings ratio of just 17.2.

Cray XK6 Supercomputer Used to Analyze Ice Cream

By: Jeffrey Burt
2012-07-30

Researchers in Scotland are using the massive system to find out how the various ingredients in ice cream interact and, in turn, improve other common products.

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh are using a Cray supercomputer to make ice cream taste better and last longer.

The Scotland university is leveraging a 10-cabinet Cray XK6 supercomputer—armed with a combination of standard x86-based Opteron chips from Advanced Micro Devices and 936 Tesla graphics technology from Nvidia—to simulate ice cream with the aim of getting a better understanding of how the various ingredients that go into making ice cream interact with each other.

With that knowledge in hand, the researchers with the Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre (EPCC) can improve the taste of ice cream and give it a longer shelf life, according to officials with Nvidia. In addition, the knowledge gained from the research into ice cream can be applied to a host of other products that people use every day, from paint, mayonnaise and engine oil to yogurt, soap and shampoo, according to Alan Gray, one of the lead scientists in the program at EPCC.

While turning the power of a supercomputer like the XK6 to a subject like ice cream may sound a bit frivolous, Gray and Cray official Jay Gould said that like other products commonly in use today, the underlying substances and the way they interact are complex, and a powerful system is needed to run the necessary computations.

"If you zoom in on the substances and if you're able to view them microscopically, you would see they're really made up of quite complicated structures of different materials," EPCC's Gray said in a video about the project.

Cray's Gould said that using anything less powerful than a supercomputer would take far too much time.

"To get down to the details of doing simulations and modeling the world as we know it—to better understand it—you've got to have a lot of compute power … not just a laptop," Gould said in the video. "If you used a laptop to generate some of these computations, it might take five lifetimes. We don't have time to do that."

Cray and Nvidia are touting the Edinburgh ice cream project not only as a way to show how supercomputers can play a significant role in better understanding everyday life, but also the performance advantages of using hybrid systems, which leverage both traditional CPUs, like those from AMD and Intel, as well as GPUs as coprocessors.

According to a post on Nvidia's blog by Andy Walsh, director of marketing for the company's Tesla business, the EPCC team initially conducted research using a Cray supercomputer powered by more than 200,000 CPU cores in 200 cabinets. They then switched to the XK6, realizing that "smaller, GPU-accelerated systems offered the same level of capacity for their needs."

The use of such coprocessors and accelerators is gaining traction in the supercomputing world. The organization that creates the Top500 list of the world's fastest supercomputers found that in the latest list, released in June, 58 of the systems used coprocessors and accelerators, up from 39 supercomputers six months earlier. Fifty-three of those 58 supercomputers use Nvidia chips, while two use Cell processors, another two use ATI Radeon GPUs from AMD and one system is running Intel's new Many Integrated Cores (MIC) coprocessor technology.

Nvidia chips are found in three of the top 10 fastest supercomputers, according to the Top 500 list.

Nvidia's Walsh said the EPCC ice cream project is part of a larger trend in the high-performance computing field of using supercomputers and simulations to "improve the quality of thousands of products we use every day, from golf clubs to medicines to automobile engines." Cray's Gould said projects like the ice cream research by the EPCC will have far-reaching impacts.

"If we can control the way phase separation occurs and those kinds of things for ice cream, we can leverage it into all kinds of other, more important technologies as well," he said.

CRAY Confirms it's a Good Stock to Own. Yelp Takes Center Stage.

Yesterday after the close, Global supercomputer leader and SmallCap Network Featured Stock Cray Inc. (CRAY) announced their financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2012. Revenue for the quarter was $84.2 million compared to $67.9 million in the prior year period. The Company reported net income for the quarter of $147.4 million or $3.91 diluted income per share compared to a net loss of ($3.0 million) or ($0.08) per share in the second quarter of 2011. All in all, strong results. You can read the press release in its entirety here: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/cray-inc-reports-strong-second-200500000.html.

More importantly, the Company suggested a wide range of results remains possible for 2012 by suggesting many variables may impact their results. One significant item is the timing of a single planned customer acceptance, which would represent approximately $150 million in product revenue. This is the largest system the Company has ever built and its acceptance is dependent on several items, including third-party components, all on a tight timeline due to previous delays. Assuming acceptance of this system occurs in 2012, as currently planned, the Company continues to anticipate total revenue to be in the range of $430-$450 million for the year.

Since shares of CRAY have performed extremely well in the face of a bad market in recent months, we wouldn't be overly concerned about its 5% dip today. The stock is up nicely on the year, and yesterday's earnings report confirms the Company is growing and doing well. We'd use this as a potential buying opportunity rather than focusing on their somewhat cautious outlook as a negative. It's just smart management of expectations on their part, while their financials continue to look solid.
