LONDON (MarketWatch) -- U.K. stocks rose Thursday, in broad-based gains that included a higher move for AstraZeneca following regulatory approval of a drug to treat cancer.
The FTSE 100 rose 0.8% to 6,384.51 as all sectors advanced. Most oil and gas stocks continued to build on Wednesday's advance, when the sector staged a turnaround late in the session on a rebound in oil prices. Tullow Oil rose 2.3% and oil-services firm Petrofac Ltd. put in 2.1%, while Royal Dutch Shell PLC swung to a 0.2% rise.
U.S. crude-oil futures on Wednesday came off a five-year low after data showed U.S. crude inventories declined, although the drop was less than forecast.
AstraZeneca PLC shares tacked on 1% as the European Commission approved the company's Lynparza capsules for use by patients with ovarian cancer. The drug may be used in all 28 EU member states, as well as in Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.
