TULSA, Okla., Dec. 4, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- What a
way to end the season! Monster Energy congratulates Connor Fields on winning the USA BMX #1 Pro Title at the USA BMX Grand Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Sunday. At the iconic BMX
racing event contested inside the River Spirit Expo Center from
November 28-29, the 28-year-old from
Las Vegas, Nevada, emerged on top
of a field of the world's fastest riders to defend his 2019 title
and win the championship for the third time in his career.
The USA BMX Grand Nationals
were contested for the 22nd time this weekend. Contested amid
strict safety rules and social distancing guidelines in response to
the coronavirus pandemic, the event attracted a total of 2,750
competitors from 40 states. Ever since the start of the outbreak in
spring 2020, the USA BMX
association has managed to run over 20 races while working closely
with health officials.
In the event's AA Pro category, defending champion Fields
stepped to the winding dirt track inside the River Spirit Expo
Center as a favorite. But like every year, Fields and 30 of the
fastest pros on the planet needed to earn their way to the finals
the hard way. Starting with qualifiers on Friday, the pack battled
for top positions through a semi-finals race on Sunday, from which
the top eight riders qualified into Sunday's championship race.
Although Fields happened to qualify into a semi-finals race
against the fastest riders in attendance, he managed to take the
lead and retain it all the way to the line for the win. This put
Fields into Sunday's main event and give him the best shot to
retain his 2019 USA BMX #1 Pro title and try to make it two
championships in a row.
When finals day arrived on Sunday, all that stood between Fields
and the championship was a series of three races, overall winner
takes it all. In the first main event, Fields had a good run but
rode smart and cautious for a solid 2nd place finish. The defending
champ turned up the heat in race two, taking an early lead after a
tremendous start and holding it until the finish line for the win.
When it all came down to the third and final race, Fields proved
his nerves as one of the most consistent pro riders in BMX history.
As the gate slammed for the last time, it was Fields once again
with the hole shot and the fastest lap of the weekend, riding in
dominant fashion and taking the win to secure the overall
USA BMX #1 Pro title for 2020.
"A lot of things about this year sucked but happy to end it on a
high note like this with my third USA BMX title. Thank you goes out to my
sponsors, coach, and family for the unwavering support," said
Monster Energy's Fields upon winning the USA BMX #1 Pro title in Tulsa on Sunday. "The Olympics are incredible,
Worlds is amazing, too. But there is nothing quite like the Grands.
The Pro spectacular is my favorite race of all!!"
An avid BMX fanatic since his childhood days, Fields is an
Olympic gold medalist after his win for Team USA at the 2016 Summer Olympics in the men's
BMX event. He made history as the first American to win an Olympic
BMX gold medal and is a four-time USA Cycling National champion. Despite the
pandemic, Fields put down a highly successful 2020 season: After
winning two of the first three World Cup competitions of the
season, he claimed the 2020 UCI BMX SX World Cup title and also won
the 2020 USA Cycling National Championship. This weekend's win at
the USA BMX Grand Nationals is his
second in a row, a feat rarely accomplished in pro BMX racing.
