BROOKLYN, N.Y., July 13, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Eriksen
Translations, a leading language services provider, has published a
glossary of 150 COVID-19 terms in 18 languages. This resource has
been made available at no charge to support healthcare
organizations and government agencies, as well as the general
public, in keeping people safe and informed during the
pandemic.
LANGUAGE ACCESS DURING THE PANDEMIC
The COVID-19 health crisis makes language more important than ever.
From handwashing to social distancing, the appropriate precautions
can limit the spread of the virus. This means information about the
pandemic and all pertinent public health guidelines must be made
available in as many languages as is feasible. Consequently,
translators have become crucial for their role in making critical
health information accessible to individuals with limited English
proficiency.
HOW GLOSSARIES SUPPORT ACCURATE, CONSISTENT MESSAGING
Eriksen's COVID-19 glossary is a list of words and phrases that
frequently appear in communications related to the coronavirus
pandemic. Each term is translated into 18 languages: Arabic,
Bengali, Chinese-Simplified, Chinese-Traditional, French, Greek,
Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean,
Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Urdu, and Yiddish.
To translate and edit the glossaries, Eriksen carefully
assembled a team of 36 medical translators, doctors, and biomedical
researchers. Each team was highly skilled in its target language,
with collective experience translating public health-related
subject matter and medical terminology.
As the pandemic continues, language barriers should not stand
between people and the information they need to keep themselves and
their families safe. As healthcare providers, local governments,
and community organizations communicate across languages, a
glossary improves the impact of the messaging, giving more people
access to reliable, actionable information.
"To combat this pandemic, everyone needs information in a
language they can understand," said Vigdis
Eriksen, Founder and CEO of Eriksen Translations. "By
creating this glossary, we are doing our part to protect the health
and well-being of our communities."
