Volkswagen AG was charged with 60 counts of contravening the
Canadian Environmental Protection Act, government agency
Environment and Climate Change Canada said Monday.
Volkswagen allegedly imported almost 128,000 vehicles that
didn't conform to Canadian vehicle emissions standards, the agency
said. In addition, the company was also charged with providing
misleading information, Environment and Climate Change Canada
said.
"In September 2015, Environment and Climate Change Canada
launched an investigation into the importation into Canada of
certain models of vehicles allegedly equipped with a prohibited
'defeat device,' which in this case, is software that reduces the
effectiveness of the emission control system during normal vehicle
operation and use," the agency said.
A Volkswagen AG spokesperson said "Volkswagen AG has cooperated
fully with the investigation by Environment and Climate Change
Canada. Volkswagen AG and ECCC will attend a hearing before the
Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto on December 13, 2019. At the
hearing, the parties will submit for the Court's consideration a
proposed plea resolution and seek its approval. The details of the
proposed plea resolution will be presented at the hearing."
